i've a mate who's forever banging on about how much wedge he makes as an IBM reseller

surely in this econmic climate IT sales must be on the floor?

He's very unlikely to be making that much.

Things are leaner than a few years ago but there is still plenty of business out there. You just have to work a bit harder and allot smarter to find it.

I predict another 12 months like it is before we see the start of an upturn.

TK....How do you know my income. I work in SAP and if you know anything about it then you will also know that their are rich pickings to be had.

I don't need to justify my salary to you. Just to my wife and she is happy.

There is no money in hardware sales, but if they are selling services such as outsourcing then he may be doing ok still..

..and yes Jason, everyone I know who works with SAP makes damned fine money (but not as much as meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee);)

things is I thought companies had no money so how can they buy fancy computers and more to the point why do they need to, surely most companies already have all they need

it's like me buying a 20k car and in a year binning it and buying another 20k car but this one does 0-60 .5secs quicker...why bother

Yeah CC, the company I work for are not buying any hardware, and have not spent any serious money on kit in the past two years.

On the other hand, quite a few companies are dumping their internal IT nerds, and getting outsourced nerds in. Whilst this costs more in the long term, and you typically get a lower quality geek, it clears a lot of headcount and looks good on the books for a year or two. Then the directors don't feel so bad spending on their new company car.. :)

no this guy sells IBM hardware...no outsourcing as far as I know....he says he earns £150k a year....he's well into cars and only has a Beemer Z3 3.0i....I'd have thought if he were making that sort of money he'd buy a car that was on his wish list but he doesn't

I think its around 40k basic 5k car allowance

what makes me suspicious is he says he earns it but no real evidence of it and I know he doenst save it

Depending on which IBM BP your mate works for, then he may well be earning a good amount still.

There is still plenty of money to be made in IBM hardware sales, not every IT company is going through hard times ;)

I really do beleive that you must love the job you do and not just do it for the money.

I used to be a commercial diver working offshore but I started to dislike the job. The money was fantastic and the travel was good but eventually I hated the job so I got out.

I would rather work in a industry that I loved for less money.

I am fortunate enough now to have a job that I love in a company that is great and the renumeration is great too.

Seek and you will find.

I work for a global SAP consultancy. I have always toyed with computers and the software and I just drifted into it. I had a call while at Glastonbury and was offered the job. The rest, as they say is history.

I would guess from the figures your talking about he's selling Mid Range stuff like AS/400's & E series. Silly money to be made if commision based and the right sale comes along. A guy I know made £500,000 on one sale to a large financial institution!!!

there is some silly money to be made, but its like anything if your in the right place at the right time or know the right people etc then it can be done.

I know for a fact one of my mates made £30K in 1 day, purely by taking a truck load of computers literally round the corner and selling them on.

This kind of stuff was easier to do a few years back, times certainly are harder, but its not a total drought.
