Looking at Sydmouth/Honiton area. Always wanted to be by the sea Gonna rent for a year or so to make sure we like it and it is all we want it to be before buying. Any suggestions/reccomendations for villages/towns, letting agents or properties.

At last a subject that I really know something about!:)

We've spent the last 4 months looking for properties in Devon and finally found one we like. We are moving to a farm near Bideford in North Devon.

The estate agents I can recommend are:

I've lived in Devon for 23 years - more recently I spend time between Devon and London, i'm looking to buy a property in East Devon in the next 6 months or so.

Sidmouth is nice, expensive though and full of old people, North Devon is cheaper and perhaps a better bet than the south (and excelant if you like surfing)

By the way Honiton is at least 10 miles fronm the sea!

Also be aware that the Met Office is currently in the middle of relocating to Exeter. Should be complete by year end.

This has apparantly caused a local rise in prices.

I believe London Electric are also relocating at the moment but I don't know their timescales.

I would suggest having a look at the market in Devon as far from Exeter as you can, or at least wait until '04 before buying closer in.

Honiton is okay, sea isn't too far away. You at least have Dunkeswell airfield and Kart racing circuit on the doorstep, not to mention about 1000 antique shops.

Never lived there, but passed through Honiton about 100 times to and from kart racing.

Weather can be changeable to say the least, nice (but narrow) quient country roads etc. Bit of a pain to get too, but much easier since they redid the roads on and beyond the A303. Bristol about 1 hour and a bit away for things like airports etc.

Probably better (nicer) places to pick from in the area though.

One of the reasons for moving to Devon is to be near Dunkeswell Kart track. :) This will save me £600+ ferry crossing from Jersey to get to UK tracks.

Which class do you race in? I've got a Max, my 13 year old son a Junior Max and today I ordered a Mini Max for my 11 year old son.

Not raced there yet but hoping to get there next month possibly.

If you are looking at sea side towns be prepared to give your wallet a serious thrashing. House prices in Sea Side towns have gone through the roof, as more and more people realise how nice a place Devon by the sea is :D
Don't rule out a city, Plymouth has everything you could need, schools, shops (all National chains), etc etc. It has all the advantages of a city but without the traffic problems etc of a major city.
I live just outside Plymouth, I can be on Dartmoor in 10 mins or by the sea in 5 mins.
Bristol is only 1 1/2 hours by car (less by scooby).

How about in Bude? Its about as North Cornwall as you can get before hitting Devon. My parents have only just put their house on the market this week. Nice 4 bedroom bungalow (1 is a converted spare room and is huge, study, 3 bathrooms (1 en suite), double garage, massive driveway with a nice bit of land. £399,500 via Scammell.

I come originally from close to London and decided to live in Devon after we came here for holidays for a few years. The West Country is a beautiful area and we have never regretted moving here. When I go back to the London area to visit my mother,it serves to underline the fact that I would not want to live anywhere near there anymore.

There are so many things to do here, from countryside persuits to boating, the local people are friendly and life is very relaxed.

I'm iching to move to Devon ASAP.

Trouble is selling my house here in Jersey.

My neighbour Nigel Mansell getting beaten up last week probably hasn't helped. Sorry to go off topic.

Devon really is beautiful and one of the few places expected to still have rising property values, not that I'm too worried about that.

The best thing is that it has peace and tranquility if you want but also plenty of things to do within easy range.

The perseon to speak to at Scammels office in Bude is a Trevor Jones, very helpful chap.
