about 2 months ago i thought my bike deserved a service (saracen addiction worth about 3k with all the kit) so i thought put on new cables and gore tex outers.
so i had fitted it all and was adjusting the rear mech cable and finally thought id got it right so i took it for a wee run without cutting the slack of the rear mech cable!!!
to cut it to a short story the slack cable caught between the chain and cassette and proceded to snap the rear mech off the frame put it through the back wheel ruining every spoke and the it caused the bleed nipple for the hydraulic brake to snap off.

put it this way i needed a new rear drop out and new xtr front and rear shifter a new wheel and new caliper.

in the end changing the cables cost me £270 all in last time i change the fekin cables!!!!!!!!

Sounds like a good plan to me. Perfect excuse to go out and buy some new componentry. ;)

It's a good reason why I just take mine into the local bike shop for that sort of maintenance. Did mine in January - got the whole thing serviced, including a cable replaced and a wheel trued, all for £25 (including parts). :D

well im fed up paying for it because have to replace bits all the time but better now its got full XTR and hope 4 pots all round and a rock shox rear shock and boxxer forks

I bought my GT Karakoram about 5yrs ago and it's NEVER been serviced :eek:

u dont go out on it enough then i would say a chain needs replaced every 40 days or so and a chainsets only last me a year if they do not break first

Replacing a chain every 40 days? I don't think so!!! (unless you mean every 40 full days of riding, i.e., every 1,000 hours or so).

But you're right though in one respect - if you're riding regularly lots of components will need replacing much sooner than every 5 years. I reckoned to wear out a rear cassette (i.e., chain slipping 'cos of worn down teeth on the cogs) about once a year, and that was riding 4-6 times a week.

well mark i do about 5k a year and if u replace a chain regulary or even turn it round it will make ur cassette and chainset lst alot longer.

Fair enough. Guess the '40 days' rule depends on exactly how much you ride on an average day. ;)

I'm currently only riding (the equivalent of) 1,000 miles a year, so my stuff will wear out slower. Which is a shame, as it's always nice to have an excuse to buy new kit. ;)

well just do what i did but regret it now spending so much cos i want a car but spent all the money on the bike il put up a post now to see if someone wants to buy my other saracen.

Only use the bike twice a week, so about 50-60 miles (approx 3K a year max).

Brakes work, chain works, pedals work .... OK, I can't select a the bottom or top cogs, but I never use them anyway. Big cog on the front and 3 on the back is all I've needed so far. May not be the most efficient use of energy, but it's got me fitter and my legs are stronger as a result.

My main sport is running and I go through a couple of pairs of trainers every 3-4 months, so each to their own I suppose :)

well thats fair enough stephan whatever does it for u their is proably no need for such a good bike but its fun just like owning a P1 WOULD be!!!!!!!!
