Gents (and ladies), what are the tell tale signs of a blown or faulty turbo, from a performance angle?

when mine went on my vectra
about a week b4hand i got this mad whineing whistle on boost

then it started smoking big style and finaly when i took it of the downpipe was full of oil so bad, it looked like cv boot grease lol
