Hi

I'm looking to buy a scooby i have around 8k to spend.
Can you give me some advise on;

What type of fuel consumption should i expect?. Is there any difference in WRX and standard 2 l turbo ( fuel consumption )?

What year should i be looking at?

Thanks

Gary

Basically if Fuel consumption is going to be a deciding factor to which scooby you buy, you probably shouldn't buy one at all! I know when I bought my P1 Fuel consumption didn't even make the reserve list of Pro's and Con's....!

Don't take that statement to heart! I'm not trying to be condescending, just realistic! Cheers, good luck with the hunt!

A Uk turbo will be cheaper to run from an insurance point of view and an mpg point of view. The imports tend to have slightly short gearing. I get abput 17mpg out of my RA but that has a really short set of gears. I did have a UK turbo which I averaged 23mpg. I am not lead footed driver and regularly get 36+mpg out of a Ford Focus 1.6. Scoobs are well known to have bad fuel economy and really overfuel at high revs as a protection mechanism.

Dont want to put a downer on it for you but you need to do the maths. A car of that age will require 2 services a year 100 for the interim and anything upto 300-500 for the big one. Set of tyres will probably last you a year (10,000miles) as will a set of pads. A cheap year is going to cost you well over 1000 just for maintenance. Assuming 10,000 a year and 80p litre and 25mpg thats another 1,500. Dont know about insurnace as it dependant on you but I must be in the region of 500-1000 a year.

maintenance 1000
petrol 1500
insurnace 750

Thats 3250 per year and that doesnt include any mods or fixing broken bits etc. Perosnally I woudl have said realistically its going to be closer to 4K especially for an older car.

ok, thanks for the all the advise so far. Fuel consumption is not an issue i've just heard so many horror storys.

If your after a scooby for the first time i can give you a few pointers to help you, Ive got a 96 Type RA, if your going to do alot of motorway miles then dont get an RA, the gearing is very short, lightening through the twisty stuff but tireing on a journey and very thirsty. I would say that the RA is a weekend car only. Any scoob that has STI, type RA, type R ect after its name is generaly dearer to insure because these cars have more power than a standard WRX, i am talking imports here as i dont realy know enough about 'British' scoobs to coment on them Oh yeah, all of the above will be four doors except the type R, 22B, and 'Brit' P1, these are 2 door (wagons excluded, obviously 5)
Whilst im on the subject i know of a mint type RA for sale!
