Help!
Bought a 2nd hand '97 ForesterGLS (non-turbo),and soon after developed a sluggish acceleration thru the mid-rev range.Main dealers said it was plugs, then leads, then faulty ECU! Another dealer said a lot of early Foresters had ECU probs and they had since upgraded it. Subaru UK not wanting any part of it...what a surprise! Spares/breakers said there was no such prob.and u can only replace ECU with like4like. Said I could find it in passenger footwell but only found blower& heater matrix there! Does anyone have any advice please? Also, maybe connected is a severe interference when using VHF airband radio in or near car when ignition is on.

The ECU is under the passenger footwell carpet, behind a steel plate. Seem to remember about four bolts to undue.
Did the dealer who said it was leads do anything about it?
Does the interference go hand in hand with reving the engine? if so then ignition sounds like the problem. Check for loose HT-plug covers, caps on plugs, cracking on the module block, clean the leads....
I will flick through a service manual later to see if it has any clues.
