Hi all,

I'm after some advice for a very of mine with a bit of an insurance problem. Basically I'm looking for a company who will quote him for his hand build Mk1 VW Golf. He built it from the ground up and is a exceptionally nice car, which has been featured in VW magazines. Its a 5-dr, with a Passat GT engine in it and lots of other bits and bobs (full leather interior, adjustable shocks etc). It's basically a 5 door Mk1 GTi, which of course never existed. It's not a exceptionally quick car, but the last time he insured it it cost over £800.

He's in his late 20s, with a good driving record - also rides a fast bike with no claims and has a company car also. I also doubt he would do a serious milage in it, so a restricted mileage policy would be no problem.

I suggested that he got a classic insurance quote based on a 5 door 1.3 CL with all the respective modifications (new engine etc.). Would this classify as lying to the company? Its not on a Q plate so I wonder if they would really care?

So can anyone recommend companies to try? Or offer any advice to get reasonable quotes?

Cheers,

Chris

Any of the specialists that advertise in the magazines should be able to sort your mate out, HIC, Performance Direct, Adrian Flux, etc. It might help if he was to get an engineering report done on the car, these help to keep the premium down also. I had a report done on my pug turbo conversion and it meant my premium only went up by about £40/50.

hearts insurance consultants (hic) insure my mk1 golf. Im allowed any mods as long as i stay under 200bhp and dont have a turbo. I pay £450 fully comp, its running on twin 40`s, 1800 gti, with ported and polished head, manifold, cam etc, etc,, built from the ground up, it was a 1 litre, i have pics but dont know how to post them.
ask for phil, he helped me loads.
