My ISP gives me some free webspace, I've registered and I can see a webpage that says it's under construction - what do I do/need now?

I'd like to muck about with this free space as cheaply as possible till I learn a bit about setting up a webpage. Eventually I'd like to create a small site with a Intro/contacts front page and a password protected area with few files available for dowload and upload.

Any advice/links to articles or freeware welcomed.

Kevin.

You need an FTP program to transfer the files, and something to create the pages if you don't want to do it all freehand.

http://www.coffeecup.com do both, or you could try MS Frontpage for simplicity

It’s probably best to get the hang of basic HTML before you start using FrontPage that way you don’t totally depend on it. I use SmartFTP to upload my files and found this site helpful for learning HTML code http://www.wigglebits.com/.

My web page made with FrontPage

My basic HTML web page made with Microsoft Notepad

Thanks for the help, now starting to understand what I need to do. Doesn't help when the host seems to be up and down more times than Ulrika's underwear.......

Tim_grove, you must have spent at least 5 seconds on designing that site of yours. LOL.

BB:)

PS I am only jealous, because i cant design to save my life, despite working for an internet company... hahahahah

kevin, learn some basic html
then rip off other peoples sites and nick all the good bits.

it will give you an understanding quickly, and save you lots of laborious workthroughs.....

About 4 secs beemerboy:D, that’s only my second attempt a building a web site didn’t even know what HTML was a few months ago. Don’t use computers at work or anything and only have average computer knowledge, so im pritty much a beginner to building web sites too.

Mrx I was tidying up my web space putting pics in folders relevant to there page rather than just junking everything in together, when I had finished I seemed to have lost the pictures somewhere still had the thumbnails but the main pics had gone??? Must have deleted them by accident and I haven’t got the originals on my hard disk because I have reinstalled windows since. I will have to get round to replacing the pics with new ones soon.
