Asking on behalf of a friend, where would he be able to have number plates made up which might look nice with interesting fonts and spacing on them

All to hang on his bedroom wall of course :D

Blinking BMW drivers  ;)

I used them too. Very prompt service, and good results. However, the nice officers that pulled me, and gave me a £30 fine weren't quite so impressed.

One or two of these companies are based outside the UK, which is why they can get away with legitimately manufacture plates with creative spacing and fonts.

I found a good compromise by using a local company who advised me based on what the local officers considered acceptable. If I'd done that in the first place, I could have saved myself the £65 for the plates and the fine.
