Obviously the London congestion charge is making lots of money, as he's now thinking about applying congestion charging around Heathrow airport too.

Fair enough, in central London there is public transport, but I would imagine a large majority of people who use Heathrow airport have to use their car to get there.

Does he not appreciate that we can't carry our suitcases on our bikes? Barsteward

It costs approx. £25 each way for me in a black taxi.
This place becomes more of a joke with each passing hour.

What about the 100,000 + who work in or around Heathrow? where does he think these people will find another £100 a month just to get to work, especially as a lot of people are doing menial jobs which dont pay a great deal, and there is no indication yet of the catchment area can you imagine the M25 say between the M3 jct and the M40 jct being in the scheme, how many people would come off the M25 at one of these junctions and go cros country to avoid the charge before rejoining the M25, obviously not everybody would do this but a fair percentage might. Even if the Co I work for up's our wages to cover the charge we will still have to pay more N.I.

My neighbour works for Camden Council and he tells me that whenever there is a meeting of the council all the councillors pull up in there chauffer driven Rover's Volvo's and Ken walks round the corner for media purposes saying use public transport looking like Mr good guy when in reality his chauffer walks round the corner 5 minutes later to have a smoke with the other chauffers and they all take the piss and say where are you parked today!! its all a publicity stunt he always parks round the back and only uses the tube or bus if he has a camera crew with him, has he ever been out of central London?? never seen it myself.

PISSED OFF

absolutely ridiculous. Is he expected to get re-elected next year? Surely the congestion charge issue alone has made him sufficiently unpopular that he wont get back in.

The toll would also deter people from getting family or friends to drop them off and pick them up, which he dubbed "kiss-and-fly".
Errr, and whats wrong with this exaclty????

I paid £80 for a taxi last time I flew from there because the trains/buses did not get me there on time. My alternative whould have been to get a friend to take me.

Nimbus 10 April 2003 01:16 PM

A further 30,000 who arrive by taxi would be exempt from the toll as would the airport's 68,000 staff.

As I'm starting anew job there on Monday I say Amen to that!
Does this pr!ck not realise that you HAVE to drive to get to LHR?
My journey is going to take me 30 mins by car, and cost about £6-50 a day. Compare that to the train. £20 to London Waterloo. Tube to Paddington, then the Heathrow Express. That would take the best part of 1hr 20mins and cost what, £35?? The bloke is a stupid tw@t!

damian666 10 April 2003 02:32 PM

How do the car park operators feel about this? They will have to either up the fees to keep profits up, or lower them to attract more customers!

Funkii Munkii 10 April 2003 03:17 PM

"The airports 68,000 staff would be exempt", I hope this incorporates the surrounding areas, where so many of the freight, catering and other service companies are based, lets hope he's done his homework because not everyone who works at LHR works in the central area.

dharbige 10 April 2003 04:17 PM

I though Heathrow was in Middlesex?

Andy Tang 10 April 2003 04:21 PM

And all he'll do is cause congestion at the first bus stop, train station, tube station, etc, that is outside of the charge area!!

Clever thinking Ken, you tw*t!

Freak 10 April 2003 04:25 PM

well everyone knows you have to have a common sense bypass to be a politician...

its a crock.
heathrow isnt hugely congested- its the end of the M4 that is-thanks to fatty 2 jags (empty) bus lane.

Why the hell shoudl you be discouraged from dropping people off at the airport...?
This country is getting worse and worse....
