It is the right SORT of cable, but if you are connecting two machines directly you need a crossover cable rather than a straight RJ45 to RJ45. Sounds complicated but it isn't really. All it means is that the transmit and reciever pairs in the cable are crossed over, so that the TX of one pc goes to the RX of the other pc and Vice Versa.

i have a bit of cat5 cable which i have had given to me and a 4 port hub so together they should work yes? :D

And they only have it in pink!

CAT-5 comes in allsorts of colours, Pink included. Snagless means the RJ-45 ends have an extra bit of plastic that allows them to be draged through a bundle of other cables in a patch cabinet.
