'Cos of my mega miles I need to make sure that any power improvement mods don't over stress/cause premature engine wear etc - so I guess that doing the exhaust system should be the best route?

I've been thinking about a bigger back box but really hope to find at least 25/30 bhp, will a better exhaust and straight through centre section give that? Money's tight but I'd rather save for the best solution than bung on something I'd end up replacing later on :-)

I'm looking for more tourque low down as well as bhp increase, is a down pipe upgrade needed too?

Can any of these bits be found secondhand or is it a better idea to only buy new? The car is MY02 WRX so far with just upgraded suspension.

Sorry about all these questions!

Cheers!

:-)

You only get about 25bhp with a downpipe too IMHO. The downpipe is also the key element for the lower down power; bringing the turbo at lower revs.

Echo 30 March 2003 10:03 PM

25 bhp with the whole exhaust including downpipe? That's not a lot of power for all that money! :-(

Hmmm.

Thanks for that! :-)

Buy second hand bb, centre, dp if poss, then save for Tek2 or Tek3.

Mike,
A full Scoobysport exhaust will give you more power although at the expense of a bit more noise.Have a full system on my 01 (Up/Down pipes, centres and backbox) and it made 262bhp on the rolling road together with an ITG panel filter.Bonus now is the car pulls really strong all the way to the red line!!! (I found mine when standard started to drop off at around 5k rpm)

Good luck

Nick :D

Echo 31 March 2003 10:39 PM

Err, ball park price to do that Nick? Would that be too loud for long journeys with hangover? :-)

Silly question, does fuel economy (what economy?) change?

Cheers!

:-)

Bought mine second hand actually.Probably cost around £450 for my complete exhaust but they are probably closer to £900 to buy brand new!!
It is a lot noisier on the motorway (More so after I had my up-pipe changed) but it's bearable.Best thing is to get somebody to take you out in theirs and see what you think!!

Cheers

Nick

Mike
I bought my scoobysport backbox secondhand last year for £180.
It sounds great:Dand gives a nice rumble to the exhaust.
New they are about £317.
Check out www.scoobysport.co.uk:D:D
I have just ordered a centre section from them on monday.
Cant wait to hear it then:cool::cool::):)
I read somewhere that the backbox and centre section may give
about another 18bhp. 30bhp or so if you change the downpipe,
but you will have to swap it back for mot's:(:(
They are a nice product.
Good luck
Greg:)

+35bhp would probably be realistic if you do the up-pipe as well as a full turbo back exhaust.

If you're after super quiet, get your headers ported (improves spool up and mid range torque, a little more power and yet a bit quieter too), change you up-pipe and downpipe, and leave the standard centre section and back box for now. The noise won't go up very much, the turbo will come in much earlier = better torque and the power will go up a fair bit too. Change the centre section for a decat resonated one later, leave the backbox to last.

The backbox is by far the biggest contributor to the noise and makes very little difference to the mid range torque on a fairly standard car IMHO. Changing it will give plenty of flat 4 burble and better power at high revs, but you have to balance that against motorway noise.

Echo 01 April 2003 07:56 PM

Great advice!!! I was checking out scoobysport's site last night and am very tempted getting the whole lot done at once - depends if my tax rebate comes off!!! If it doesn't I may be tempted to do a scoobysport back box as I crave a bit more burble first.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed I can do the whole thing!

Oh, forgot to ask - why is the MY02 centre section twice the price of the classic?

Steve vRS 01 April 2003 08:23 PM

Just fitted my full MY01 (apart from up-pipe) Scoobysport system. it is :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D.

I bought the backbox with the car 18 months ago and bought the downpipe, centre section (x2) and CEL fix second hand. I fitted all the system myself.

The sound is excellent. Nice and rumbley and you can really hear the turbo whistle.

I have an up-pipe but am going to let a proper garage fit that. I already have an ITG filter so 260bhp, here I come!

The overall driveability is now excellent. It probably rivals a classic for acceleration now. In fact, it probably beats one (flame suit on) ;).

Hey Dan! Elaine's said that I can have the exhaust if I find a grand for her to go shopping with - for baby stuff! Hadn't thought of the baby seat, doh!

:-)

Many thanks to everyone for all the really useful advice. I suppose that I should test drive a moded car to see if I could live with the noise on the motorway, if anyone's got a really good nick scoobysport/etc back box please let me know ...

Dan, can I pop up to check yours out this week?

Cheers!

Mike

GTMR 01 April 2003 08:36 PM

Do the backbox if you want a nice noise, but I'd think about getting an ecutek remap (around £750 from Power Engineering or Scoobysport) next. Or if you can afford it go for a full exhaust then remap a la Hades (hello Phil). Both approaches should be fairly robust, but you should probably get the intercooler pipes done at the same time.

Good luck.

Grant
