Pair of jump leads, Stef. You know the rest ;)

What brand is it? Some such as HP have extremely good security measures to prevent theft. Post back here with some details of make, model and serial number if possible. Then I'll be able to help.

There's normaly a CMOS Reset jumper on the motherboard.

Gedi 29 March 2003 06:47 PM

yep, or you can just remove the cmos battery. cmos chips are volatile and will lose their settings if power is removed.

By removing the battery, you will reset the cmos removing the password in the process.

Remove the CMOS battery and short the connections. That should clear it. Failing that, there's usually an 8 pin chip (24C02) on the board somewhere. This may have to be replaced. Or depending on what make it is, I have a program that can clear it by reflashing through the parallel port.

MarkKing 30 March 2003 02:42 PM

That won't work with most HP laptops. They have very good security and will usually require a new BIOS IC. Resetting the CMOS/removing the battery does not remove the BIOS password.
If you aren't happy with dismantling and rebuilding your laptop I would advise against trying these methods as the jumpers are usually not easy to get at.

Is yours one of these? Tell me the model and serial no. if possible and I may be able to help.
