I've set a couple of PC's up on a small network consisting of a router, one is wired & the other is wireless. Both are running XP Pro.

Both PC's can use the broadband connection, but I also want to share files between them. I've set a directory on one to shared, but I cant find it from the other one. When I browse through Network Neighbourhood to Workgroup, I double click that & get

Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available
What am I doing wrong or missing ?

Go into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Settings and set "Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts" to Classic - local users authenticate as themselves.

Then make sure you have an account on each machine with identical user names and passwords.

Reboot both machines when you've done this and you should find each can now access the other.

I don't have Local Security Settings under Administrative tools - I have a Local Security Policy, but there's no 'Network Access' under that :(

Doh - found it under Local Policies !

Sorry, its Local Security Policy from Admin Tools, but once open its Local Security Settings (typical MS)- then Security Options

Done that & I'm still getting the same message - I only get it on the laptop though, it won't let me expand Workgroup. The desktop PC seems fine.

Did you change the settings, and set identical accounts up on both machines?

Check the workgroup name, make sure IP and Subnet match

Ah just had a thought - I get this from time to time on my PC at work - its something to do with Nethood IIRC.

On the laptop try opening Explorer and typing "\\{other PCs IP}\{share name} in the address bar- see if it allows a connection.

yuu have got file and printer sharing installed (under network properties) haven't you ? NetBui ?

The other thing is the workgroup name - both need to be identical.

AFAIK NetBui doesn't work on XP?
