I have just bought an STI5 TypeR from Japan and so far the only performance mod is an HKS exhaust. I planned to put an air filter on to compliment this.

My question is, is it safe to to stick an air filter on the car. I hear a lot of horror stories about people making minor mods to Jap STI engines and having adverse effects.

The car will be run on optimax and NF to try and replicate the Jap fuel.

If it is safe to stick one on, what filter do people recommend??

Also what mod/s should I consider next without putting the engine in danger??
Is a replacement downpipe feasable or am I risking boost spikes??
Any other ideas??

Thanks for your advice, as you can see, I'm adamant about doing things correct on the car with the engines safety in mind and I am not the most knowledgable person in the world when it comes to scooby engines.

Chap I also have a Type R, I had an APS induction kit fitted and IMMEDIATELY had the car remapped/link ecu as the APS is renowned for leaning out/mucking around with the MAF sensor.

The problems with other airfilters is usually the gunk on them gets on the MAF..

Are we seeing a common thing here ?

Basically if I was starting from scratch now I would get the TSL "dry" green replacement element, then get the LINK ECU upgrade/mapping from BR developments.. The Link will transform your car, ensure it's safe (you can have the knocklink and lambda link sensors/monitors) , and bypass the "problematic" MAF sensor anyways.

I don't yet have the money for a link.
They are 1000 quid and the alarm and tracker must come first.

Are we saying I am best to stick with the standard air filter until I can gather the money for the link (If I can justify paying it)

Mate,I`ve got the exact same car (99 STI Type R),its got 22400
miles on it now and has had an ITG panel filter on it since
3000 miles with no problems so far.As far as maf failures go
there have been incidences of standard cars (ie uk
cars with standard elements)failing,so whos to say the sensors
themselves havn`t developed faults irrespective of what panel
filter is used.I`d agree with wwsd in that if you are planning
an induction kit(or a decat),a remap would be neccessary to
combat the effects of lean fuelling (due to the increase in air being induced).Scoobymania sell genuine STI panel filters and I`ve
got a mate running a TSL green panel filter with no problems.

Do they not do an ECUTEK map for an STi type R the (I'm picking mine up tomorrow - YAY)!!!
I want to get it mapped, as I want to take out the ctas, and fit an induction kit - I was planning on getting a ECUTEK rempa done, but if they can't do it, I will have to go with thge link (my wallet is shrivelling in horror!!

Depends on the Model of the STI Type R for Ecutek - I know I did ask if mine could be done (Late MY98 STI 5) and they couldn't..

Excellent induction kit for your type-r!

better stick with a replacement panel filter only. how about the STI one?

is he is going down the remappable ecu, I would highly recommend go for the induction kit I have for sale, and also the downpipe I have for sale. This will greatly improve the performance of your car without a map, and even more so with a map.

I have a K&N panel on my Version 5 Type R.
Have a mapped Unichip looking after the water injection , boost and fuelling etc.

Very happy.

is that with the standard Japanese map?
I would have expected det with that setup.....mainly bacause of the decat.
