I've driven my sister 2.0 litre cougar, they are based on the mondeo estate chassis and they feel like that if attempt to take a round about at anything above 40 mph. It feels very gutless and sloppy and handles like a big old barge, but it does make a good motorway cruiser when get up to speed.
Would I buy one or my sister buy another after owning one NO.
She had more problems with it - Ok she had had two minor accidents in it - neither her fault, reslult of living in London I suppose and both repairs took over 3 months to do as parts had to come from Germany for it.
No one at Ford could not work out why it wrecked so many brake pads and drive shafts and was incapable of braking in a straight line until the third garage she took it to noticed that it had drive shaft and brake pads and disks from V6 model on one side. It had come out of the factory like this !
She is just glad its a company car and it goes at the end of next month which she can't wait for

Cougar V6 has a blinding engine, but "as above"the handling is crap.
Nearly baught one a couple of years back, but opted for the smaller Puma!

UHF 23 March 2003 08:04 AM

Agreed, dont think you can go far wrong with a Puma, very good handling and a pokey 1.7 engine.

Gareth Cheeseman had one!!!!

The V6 is a great engine and bags loads of torque :( Disagree with the handling comments though as they sit on the road quite well. Not the same handling as some other fwd cars, but once your use to it there pretty good.

I'd imagine the 2.0 litre has a loud pedal instead of an accelerator as they seem pretty sluggish until you red line to get anywhere!

Pumas are completly different cars full stop! smaller, handle miles better and are great for doing a short back and sides for other drivers when stuck in traffic jams :D I'll get my coat ;)

Cool, I suspect the cougar is pretty much like the v6 probe, sweet engine but honda accord/prelude handling i.e. numb..

ah well, will just have to look for something else..

The probe was based on the Mazda MX6!
The Cougar is based on the Mondeo which IIRC has recieved quite a bit of praise for it's chassis:)

47 NAT 23 March 2003 05:08 PM

The probe and duratech v6 engines are very different, as the probe is a mazda unit.

The only downfall I found on the Ford V6 was the water pumps were prone to go and the starter motors were a right pain to change

Whoops Brun just beat me to it ;) :D
