Am toying with the idea of upgrading? my RB5 WR Sport to either one of these and would be looking to do it in 3/4 months?

Low milage good condition 1 owner standardish 2001 P1

OR

Newish STI8 standard.

Which is going to be the best buy over 2/3 years ??

PAUL GEE 20 March 2003 05:45 PM

STi8 :)

Mickle 20 March 2003 05:55 PM

P1 :)

Defiant STI 20 March 2003 05:57 PM

STi8 :)

===WRX=== 20 March 2003 05:58 PM

sti8 is a pile of poo, looks about as threatening as a RS Turbo with syling to match.......the Japs have a lot to answer for......
I just think its lost its edge..........

P1 All the way
all the best

Josh L 20 March 2003 06:02 PM

The P1 would be cheaper, but IMHO you'd want one with a warranty you could extend. The STi is a new car, and is to my mind a better car in many ways.

I went from a P1 to an STi, not because there was anything wrong with the P1, far from it, but because it's now 2 models old, and is a bit too raw for someone of my advancing years.

So far, I haven't regretted it.

Josh

P1 Enthusiast 20 March 2003 06:20 PM

P1 you wont regret it and it will be worth more in 2 years!

Much better driving purists car! An STI is a P1 for married ppl with a wife and slippers :D :D :D

Ex_Pug 20 March 2003 06:29 PM

...except at 25 I'm not married and don't have either a pipe or slippers, but I went STi8 because the difference in quality between the build on my MY00 and the STi8 is huge. You only have to close the door on these MY03's to appreciate that. If all you want is raw, then P1 I guess.

chrisp 20 March 2003 06:29 PM

All the STI owners will say STI and all the P1 owners will say P1. What can we get from this cross section of owners model loyalty ;). No one wants to admit they have the wrong car.

I dont have either, I know if I was buying now I woudlnt have a P1 due to the age factor and not sure about an STI8 to be honest, still not powerful enough even with a PPP kit to tempt me.

r 20 March 2003 06:52 PM

JAY,the new impreza was designed by a british designer!

P1 Enthusiast 20 March 2003 07:11 PM

Disagree, P1 is already 'doing a cossie' with residuals i actually think values with flat out around 15k and stay there, its shown itself to be another Cossie in terms of a real enthusiasts car for the future.

You'll lose alot less on it than an STi8 and it will be alot more fun to drive, you dont buy a performance car to listen to door clunks (bloody n00b :P )

Steve Holmes 20 March 2003 07:23 PM

I agree with Josh L and have had both. If you do average miles then go the STi8 route as it has better build quality whilst average/high miles on a P1 will drag the resids down way beneath £15k soon as you can get them for £16K now.

OR

Do as I did and get the P1 for 6 months and change to the STi8 with PPP 'cos it's better :-)

Steve Holmes 20 March 2003 07:24 PM

Sorry,

forgot to mention crap brakes, 5 speed box, warranty breaking upgrades and poort build quality.

It was good fun though!!!!

Dunc20 20 March 2003 07:25 PM

P1....no contest.

simb 2 20 March 2003 07:25 PM

P1:)

Chins 20 March 2003 07:28 PM

P1 Enthusiast

How can you state the P1 will be more fun to drive ? What is your basis for coming to that conclusion ? A detailed reply with some indepth analysis would be interesting.

Ive had an STI 7 and P1 - currently a Golf owner, so no bias.

I'd go the STI8 with PPP everytime over the P1.

Jonathan

chrisp 20 March 2003 07:31 PM

Doors clunk, build quality, LOL what about raw excitement or has that gone out of the electric windows ;). My Focus's doors clunk and weigh 20 stone each, plus its a lot better screwed together than my old classic. So therefore it should be a better all rounder ;).

chrisp 20 March 2003 07:33 PM

I'd go the STI8 with PPP everytime over the P1
Jonathan I thought your local scoob dealer pays you to run their demo car in for 3 months ;).

SiBurt 20 March 2003 07:37 PM

I'm with Chins/Jonathon & Josh. They obviously knoe ehat they are talking about!

P1 Enthusiast 20 March 2003 07:37 PM

Ok well firstly let me say i reckon that an STI8 will lose about 5k in a 2 year ownership.

I reckon a P1 with the big brakes (alcon/prodrives) will lose 3k in that same time. Mine has lost 3k in last 22 months, but i bought it in a very good deal i admit.

As for exciting driving i am sorry but the STi does far too much for you. Lets see, engage turbo = smooth spooling and no kick in the back = less fun. No blending the power in for the driver to do smoothly with his own skill and no real skill in changing gears on long corners!

Cornering, lets see enter corner in Sti and plant it and let the front diff haul you round, great but ultimately unsatisfying. I have not done a thing apart from steer! The P1 on the other hand enters the corner, gives far more feedback, you can feel the car gripping, you setting it up on the first limit, feeding the power in and getting the corner just right.

Lets just say drove the STi8 on a road i knew, car felt pish slow and almost sloppy due the lack of feedback in the steering, corners uninvolving and speed almost irrelevant as i didnt feel i was going quick although i was! On way home drove same route in P1, huge smile at end as i explored the line and limits on the corners using my own driving skill and not some foxy bit of kit!

Only thing Sti does better is give your cash away and cruise with the turbo out faster on the motorway!

davyboy 20 March 2003 07:48 PM

So P1.....

My 944 Turbo is better than a P1 then, because it has even more turbo lag, needs more concentration, has even more steering feedback and no gay driver aids

;)

chrisp 20 March 2003 07:51 PM

Just because its newer doesnt necessarily mean its better to own.

Sure a 360 Modena is a great car but I would prefer a 250 GTO ;).

Mark 1 golf gti or 2003 golf gti ?

Escort cossie or Focus RS ?

Just because people have owned these cars doesnt mean 100% they are correct. Do you agree with all motoring journos on car reviews, judging from scoobynet I think not :D. They have driven far more cars than me or you so should be in a much better position ;).

P1 Enthusiast 20 March 2003 07:53 PM

Some driver aids are good but not the ones that remove the driver from the satisfaction of the driving thrills and pleasures. Skyline anyone? No skill needed just let the techo's sort it all out for you.

Anyway an Sti8 is gonna be nearly 10k more and lose more money, the P1 and 22B are the best enthusiast cars Subaru have built so far imho, lots of smile factor and the right performance edge.

davyboy 20 March 2003 07:53 PM

Just because its newer doesnt necessarily mean its better to own
No sh!t ;)

davyboy 20 March 2003 07:56 PM

The P1 depreciated like a bitch when it was new! Was it not a 30k car?

You can't compare depreciation on a used car to a new one. If a car is worth between 50% - 60% of what you paid for it after 30k miles and 3 years, you are doing OK.

chrisp 20 March 2003 08:00 PM

LOL that line was for your Davy :D. Actually thinking about a 911 if I can get in one :D. I reckon a porker has to be the next move for me, something different after 5 years of rally rep turbos.

davyboy 20 March 2003 08:03 PM

There is no substitute!! My next car will be a 993, just like this one! Clearly it's not as good as a P1, STi8, or RA though ;)

Anyway an Sti8 is gonna be nearly 10k more and lose more money,
As someone else pointed out. My P1 cost nearly 33k. Eight weeks later I was getting trade bids of 26k.

nearly EVERY car loses most of its value in the first year, the depreciation then settles down.

But its not all about money, its what you want to drive - stuff the money. By the looks of it youve not driven an ST8 with PPP yet. At 27k thats still 5k less than my P1 with Alcons. As for the front diff doing everything and taking the skill out, I'd question your real driving experience. Sure it can pull you round, but I certainly had some nice oposite lock moments in the STI.

I do think we still suffer from people that cant look beyond their present car which is a shame - the P1 has had its day - time to move on :)

Still I drive the EVO winning Focus and WRX bashing R32 :) which is better than any P1 :), but maybe not Chrisps Super stealthy import :)
