Not sure which sector to write this in, but:
If I run my STi V3 on slicks for hill climbing and have 314 bhp on 'tap'do you think the clutch/box will survive the start line launches (5000 rpm and dump the clutch)?
Also, if I fitted a lightweight flywheel, STi clutch and standard box with RA ratios, this should take the shock out of the system; would you agree?

on wide slicks, even with a proper diff. & box i would be wary of "dumping" the cluth, likely to leave some of your shafts/g/box on the line!!
whilst on the line take up the "bite" and then hold the car on the h/brake so there is no "play" in the drivetrain........now launch the car and this helps remove the shock to the running gear!

Slicks, and std box??? NO ( Actually should read, yes it will break.. I meant NO dont try it !! )
My car had good yres, and on a wet road, broke the box trying a launch.
If you intend launching the car off the lone, expect pretty much any std box to break.
If you are lucky the clutch will slip tho, and save the box.

Thanks to you all for the ideas, I have been 'driving' this hard on the box/clutch for a season and a half in hill climbing. My friend's RA stripped 3rd....He now has the flywheel/cluch/dogbox and it drives a dream. I race on Toyo TS1's and will get 4 wheel wheelspin off the line which helps ease the shock! On slicks I am not at all sure!! If it takes me 1 or 0.5 second longer to get going on a timed run I would fall from 2nd in class to 6th! Hill climbing is hard going.

There's a guy over here (Mike Endean, owns Xtrac) running Martin Schlanche's ex-world championship escort Mk3 rallycross car in our sprints. It has a 560bhp 1860cc engine, 4wd and he has big problems getting it off the line in our sprint when he runs 8"(?) slicks. It either grips, bogs down and drops off the cam (in most cases) or goes like poo off a shovel with a chirp from all 4 wheels! I assume that you want the slicks for faster cornering, in which case you have to weigh up the pros and cons of gaining time in the corners against potentially losing it off the line. Why not use progressively slicker tyres (yokohama A008R's?) until you get just enough wheelspin to not break the gears? At least you won't have to change tyres when it rains! How about cut slicks?

Ah! You know what you are talking about! I have toyed with the idea of list 1B tyres, Kumho's for instance, which are allowed in my class on the hills. This will give me the grip in the corners and under (desparate) braking, but not too much off the start. The car on Toyo's will cover thefirst 64 feet timing beam in 2.07secs, that's almost 1G pull on takeoff, so the Kumho's should be better as they are AA traction rating with a wear rate of just 80. the toyo's are 180.
Saw my first hill climb on your Island and have never looked back, a great sport!

Glad to be of help. Our hill record is 30 seconds now (800 yards?):eek: with top speeds up the last straight of a whisker over 100mph. Double :eek:

So am i risking anything with toyos a relatively standard UK car with a fresh AP racing organic clutch jobby as i luv the fact that i can get sum wheel spin now & probably going to santa pod soon so was thinking i can do the clutch dumping exploits without slipping risk but might i stuff sumin equally expensive?

I saw an STi type RA on our hillclimb yesterday, he was running the diff biased toward the rear which allowed him to spin them nicely on launch instead of lunching his clutch. Perhaps that's an option?

Interesting about the RA. Just completed the first Hill climb here over the Easter weekend, grabbed 2nd in class(!)Noticed my STi will spin the front wheels, not the rears (so I'm told)so this could kill the shock of the fast start. I now have a full 314 bhp, and launched hard at 4000 rpm and dump the clutch (on Toyo TS1's) in the dry and all is well. The Cossie who came first was on hill climb Avon slicks. In practice I was only 0.8 secs behind him, so not too sure just how much slicks will give me....
Keep the advice coming!
ps: anyone know if Kumho slicks are any good (or the semi slicks which are road legal)??

No details other than it's new on the hill this year and runs in the production saloons class. Class record is held by an evo5. I have some short video clips I may be able to upload sometime this week. The thing I noticed most was that lowering the suspension like a fully rally prepped WRX that was running made a huge difference to the cornering, the RA and a UK turbo looked like drunks coming out of the final bend!

When I hillclimbed my 911 it sat just 50mm off the deck, fantastic cornering (for a 911) but murder on the road.
My STi has ALL the Whiteline tricks and a few more. Corners really well, no understeer but lets go really suddenly.It is about 30mm lower than STi settings on stiffer coil-over springs. Car does roll a bit still.
