Has anyone else noticed this? All the cars I've seen have been driven by young(ish) looking drivers. Is it a go faster stripes kind of thing? Some sort of homage to Japanese imports? What?
I considered, though not for very long, buying a UK spec rear bumper on my last import just so I could have a normal horizontal plate.
I know, I know it feels stupid just typing that! What a Gibon...http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/contrib/...onkey_wink.gif

It's mostly jap imports, I'm sure. Owners are younger as they generally have less cash so imports are more attractive. Rip-off UK dealers charging too much. Imports can be more powerful, hence appealing to young'uns too :D

I also heard this morning that it was something to do with certain speed cameras not being able to read square plates. Is this true?

My god, the amount of times you see shytely modified Nova's/escorts/corsas and they have removed the usual number plate and stuck a square on somewhere on the corner of the car (where it makes the car even more laughable). The best part is when they leave the recess there HAHAHAHA.

My STI 1 came with a square UK plate and I cant be bothered to change it-doesn't seem important somehow! :)

yes digi cameras cannot read two lines of text i am reliably informed (had a square plate on my old car for years and got no end of grief from the 5-0 for it...)

I had square plates from new on all of my first 3 Imprezas, going back to 07 April 1994. Dealer fitted them and I like them, although not on my 02 WRX. I specified a rectangular one.

digi cameras are a bit more intelligent now. They still take a pic regardless. If it can't automatically read the number, then it's flagged up and a human reads it you still get fined.

Else just about every bike would be able to speed as most of them have square plates.

Yes but a lot of the digital ones read the front plate... oh bikes dont have those then...

I prefer square because I have a jap import - looks better for some odd reason.
