hi all
I need to fit 2 din size head units in my99 dash, all standard except for 3 guage pod,any ideas??

chiark 10 March 2003 10:35 PM

Either fit the dash from an import - alberick has done this - or look whether you need those air vents and get creative ;)

Either way involves quite a lot of work.

stuscooby 12 March 2003 07:03 PM

dont really want to change dash , has anybody managed two head units in a uk my99 before??????

chiark 12 March 2003 08:14 PM

mate, if you don't want to change the dash in some way then you can't do it :D :) ;)

Another option might be to use Scoobymania's larger pod to replace the oddment tray? Stupid as it sounds, do you want to be able to see the replacement unit?

I've seen a remote face mounted in a steering wheel with the unit buried in the dash...

What is it you're actually trying to achieve?

Shifty 12 March 2003 09:55 PM

You could hide one of them in the glove box.....

Steve.

Am having a go at modding mine now! 1st subaru, where alberick got his bits from will no longer ship outside the usa.
Have ordered some bits from subaru for mine, but there are no dealers in the IOM so I have gone to Robinsons in Rochdale.... now I remember what a great supplier of bike parts they were!
It'll take a while but watch this space!

hi all

what I meant was i dont want to change to a different dash, obviously i will need to make mods to mine.the reason its needed is ive just got a lcd screen only head unit and ive also got the main head unit to play cds etc so both need to be easy to get to.
heres where it gets akward!
there is a tripple guage pod allready at the top of dash so that blows that idea, the main option I can see is cutting out the center vents putting the cd there and the flip out screen in the original hole as all that sits above it is that silly dim light switch(only works on clock whats the point???) while not ideal for viewing this is all i can think of.

has anybody tried this ?

thanks all the same

stuart

why go on cutting the dash to pieces if all you have to do is pull out a plastic piece and replace it with another? (along with some other bits&changes which are "peanuts" compared to cutting the dash).

Unfortunately, as someone said above, this company in the US does not ship overseas anymore (probably my fault, I bugged them too much) but what about a Subaru breakers in the UK, grade A Subaru or something like that?

Got ya.

I've seen plenty of vent mounted stuff on the sound-off scene a few years back, but not on an impreza. I can't see why it would be any more difficult for our cars though... Anyway, it's still quite a hard option if you want to make something that looks good. Your "craft" skills will have to be quite good to make something that looks like it belongs there.

Ramon, as above, as fitted double din into an EU spec car. Do have a look at his results; it's very very neat, very "original spec" and would probably be my preferred route.

If you do decide to play with the vents, a good idea is to make up a fake front out of the original vents as a theft deterrent; that way, people don't know what's in there.

Cheers,
NIck.

sorry to sound dim! is the double din part id need to replace just the center section of the dash or the whole dash?I dont suppose you have any ideas on where i can get a pic of this from also do you?

stuscooby

here some fresh pics of my jobbie :

1 - view of the whole dash

2 - close view of the double DIN unit

http://upload.turbosport.co.uk/getpi...2511221791.JPG

3 - this is a good place to relocate your buttons, I got rid of the "Bright" button but if you absolutely want to keep it, you could put it next to the foglamp switches

Hope it helps, now where to get the new parts, I don't know but shouldn't be a big problem in the UK ...

Alberick 13 March 2003 07:31 PM

Oh and sorry for the dust in the interior, didn't realise that it's so visible on a pic...

chiark 13 March 2003 08:22 PM

I still think that is a superb job. And you've managed to swap the steering wheel over too ;)

Stu, you'll need the centre trim panel, that's all, plus some cunning way of sorting out the wiring for the stuff that Ramon's moved in his pictures.

Alberick 14 March 2003 06:03 AM

I won't tell you how I did that steering wheel thingy though...

Alberick 14 March 2003 01:21 PM

Was just thinking, maybe Japanparts.com could supply the parts you need for the conversion but then again I am not sure if they want to be bothered trying to find such small & cheap parts...?

stuscooby 14 March 2003 06:12 PM

thats just what im looking for , thanks a lot guys
whats the models this dash comes out of im going to try and source it online tonight

thanks again

Alberick 14 March 2003 07:49 PM

Good luck for finding this part!! If you manage to find them somewhere let us know, other people would surely be interested too.

Just a brief reminder :

you need 3 parts :
the dash surround from a japanese (or US) Impreza

the brackets to hold the double din (or 2 single DIN's, doesn't matter) in place

the brackets for the heater controls as they look nicely with the normal bracket combined with the new dash surround.

The other thing is that you have the remove the big metal S-shaped piece behind the ICE unit as this will hinder you fitting a double DIN unit, or in your case, will hinder fitting in the upper single DIN unit.
And of course relocate the 3 buttons above the radio slot.

Good luck,
Ramon
