Hi Guys.Toying with buying a second car later on in the year.Fancy a two seater, something that looks really sleek but still packs some BHP.I've always thought that the RX7 and the Supra were the two best looking cars Japan ever produced(imho).Driven an auto Supra but never a RX7.Looking to spend about £10-£12k on an import.
Heard that RX7s have fragile engines that pack up every 30k miles?
On the other hand Supras are quite common but RX7s still have some rarity value.I would like to do some 'mild'tuning, say up to about 320 ish BHP.
Anyone have any opinions?

30k miles? nope.
A good one will last between 60 - 70k miles, rebuild costs around £2500 all in, so not too bad really, given the price of the cars, and their performance.
Check out www.neweraimports.com for a good one.

Either of you driven a RX7?

If you want a run in an RX-7 join up with the buyers yahoo group:

FDUK

You will be made more than welcome, and free to pop along to any meets in your area.

I've never driven a Supra so can't comment on one, they do look spectacular wearing just about any bodykit, but just a bit too big and heavy for me. I'm happy with my RX-7, but would recommend you either buy one with the intention of getting the engine rebuilt (so with about 60k miles on the clock) or get one where that has recently been done.
320 bhp is easily possible with both cars, an exhaust, ECU and uprated Intercooler (and radiator) should get you there with the RX if you up the boost a bit (you may find your clutch starts to complain around this point though).

Thanks Rob.Is the £2500 all in for a good rebuild realistic in your opinion?

Robertio 09 March 2003 07:34 PM

Straight rebuild due to tip or seal failure is around the 2k mark, of course once you get it ported and whatever else the cost does rise. Mine is being done by Re:Worx, the rebuild was 2k, porting 500, and uprated seals another 900. On top of that the Apexi ECU 655, Datalogit to program the ECU 350, uprated radiator 350, water injection (to follow once run in) 380 (total = a very nasty bill). Only the 2k rebuild was required, but I can't resist spending more money I don't have.

One thing worth pointing out us the mpg is very poor on the RX-7, in normal use 17mpg is the best you can hope for

Take a look at http://www.rx7club.com

I had these two cars down to choose from when I was on the look out. I went for the Supra in the end.

The only things that swung it the Soops was was the fact they are a bit bigger, just about have rear seats (RX7 has none), and the slightly better fuel consumption of the supra. Also, the one I got had a few mods already done to it.

I think the back of the soop looks better than the back of the RX7, but prefer the front of the RX7 over the Supra.

But hay, I've had my Mk4 for a year now and its awesome.!

Dan, saw your post this morning :) I was including fitting costs in my price as being a handless cretin I have to get other people to do everything for me :o I'll be dropping you an e-mail later.

Deep Singh 10 March 2003 08:06 PM

Thanks guys I'm looking at those sites for more info.
Danny,c'ant make that meeting. If its ok I might bell you some time for some advice,Pat told me you had bought a RX.

Deep, 30,000 miles is rebuild time, when the owner has modified the car, and not allowed for the fuelling.

Rebuilds cost from £1500 upwards. Depends on what parts are required for the build.

If you want to look further at the RX-7, then can I recommend going to the wharf pub in Dartford on Tuesday night. As the MazdaRotaryClub are having a monthly meet there. Starts about 7:30 onwards.

This would give you the chance to speak to owners, and see what the cars are like.

Places to look for information are, yahoo group called FDUKBuyers and www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums

Both are UK sites/owners, so should be able to give you good information.

As for the Supra, nice looking car, quick, economical, good comparison.

Dan

Edited to add that water injection can be bought cheaper than £380.

Dan
