Second time this has happened. I get in the car, start it, it fires up first time, and within a couple of seconds, dies. It then refuses to restart, and the engine check light flashes.
When I turn it off, wait 10 seconds and try again, it goes as normal.
Interrogating the ECU shows no fault.
Why is it doing this? Anyone got any ideas, as I'm now terrified it'll let me down in the worst of circumstances, you know, like they always do?

I have a Sti that sometimes will not start if you dont catch it first time from cold. I am informed that its due to the rich cold fuel mix "flooding" the Plugs. This ones got a few toys on it which wont help as far as throwing the fuel down its throat.....

Anyway, your fault may have something to do with this.....

could it be the chip in the key sounds a bit like when people use a non registered key it lets the engine fire then cuts it and only lets it crank over then.
did hear stories from i.m about some chips never discharged a voltage in the key and when used again it generated a new voltage plus still had the old voltage which used to confuse the receiver as it was to high and thought it was being tampered with so kicked in the immobiliser. they found out that it was due to the keys being a bit warm i.e kept in trouser pockets if let to cool down a bit it was ok. don't know how true this is though.

Similar problem on MY00. Every now and then (4 times in ~ year), usually when recently stopped (e.g. at petrol station), it won't start, doing the same as you describe. Take the key out, wait for immobiliser to cut in, disarm, and it'll restart (if reluctantly). Thought it might be immobiliser related. It's in for a service next week so will enquire then, but given intermittent nature of problem...

Hmmm. All those sound very similar, and I did have the key in my trouser pocket yesterday, rather than the jacket as those pockets were full.
I'll have to wait for it to do it again, and try it.
