The newer graphics cards, especially the Nvidia and 3Dfx (R.I.P) cards draw more and more current from the AGP bus to do what they need to do. This has caused compatability problems with older boards that simply cannot supply enough current via the AGP slot. This will be highly likely with your current setup methinks if you get a sooper-dooper new card. I doubt that she will fire up with it, let alone work reliably. Also, I would say that jumping to one of the geforce series would probably slow your machine down graphically, as you will most likely want to use the more advanced graphical features that they have and you really need a faster CPU before you can get more performance and better quality without killing what little power the CPU has.

Taff: I hope u won't object to me piggy backing on this thread.

Neighbour has a 600mhz pc and wondered which of the following is best

nVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Pro, nVIDIA GeForce MX-200 OR Rage Fury Pro 32mg (prices all around $60)

Taff 25 September 2001 11:45 AM

Hey ho counterstrike people and anyone with any advice to offer

My dell P11 266mhz pc had been happily using a Creative RIVA TNT2 ULTRA for the last year and a half and now they're not getting on. Everytime the PC is switched on the screen is a patchwork of colours. I've had to put my Matrox Millenium back in so can't play CS or anything else decent anymore.

Went to buy a GEFORCE2 MX but was told it may not work properly with Win95 and even if it does, my PC is so pants it won't make the most of the card.

Any advice?

Taff

Taff, i think Mr F is right m8.

Wth the prices of chips and memory etc at the moment why not invest in some new upgraded hardware ?

A 266 P2 is in desperate need of an upgrade !

hope you get it sorted and join us for a game soon.

To be honest I'd upgrade the machine, even if that means sticking Win98 on it.

Personally I'd go for a whole new machine, and get a nice graphics card.

I recently buily my PC, spec is:

AMD Athlon 1.4ghz
512MB RAM
CDRW
5.1 speaker setup
30gb hard drive
56k modem
Logix 15inch Flat panel display.

It's currently got an ATi Rage Fury card, which plays UT quite well, but I'll be getting a GeForce 3 card really soon, and i'd like the Hercules Prophet III, which is nice, but not cheap.

then the system should kick ass, and if/when I go to dsl/whatever, it'll be a good online gamer machine as well.

If you can build a pc yourself you could cut the costs as well, and to be honest, they are not too difficult to build, if I can do it, anyone can! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Only problem is that with a Dell you are likely to have a proprietary motherboard, so you can't just pick up a new mobo/cpu/gfx card combo and dump it in the Dell case http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

We had 3 Dells go in less than a month with duff mobos. For the price they wanted to replace the motherboards, we bought in a motherboard, case, up-to-date cpu and gfx cards and built PCs twice as quick as they were previously.

May need to go and build a new one... Can be done pretty cheaply at the moment for a really beefy machine - I'd recommend something like this
80 geforce2 gts
60ish motherboard
60+ 1Ghz Athlon or more
30 256Mb RAM
30-100 Case
+Win98/Win2K

Other bits can be salvaged (such as all drives)

Cheers
Joolz

Looks like Markus beat me to it http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif
Damn slow typing...

DazV 25 September 2001 08:11 PM

I would sell your Dell onto someone who wants word processing and stuff.

Then go and buy the bits to build a new PC! Or try these guys...

Steve Perriam 25 September 2001 08:49 PM

yeah i forgot it was one of those horrid dell pc's.

good machine if u never want to do much upgrading !

we got loads at work although we now only buy compaq's so the dells are all going cos they are really old.

yeah taff new whole pc m8 - find someone who can build it and you'll be laughing.

markus - how much that lost cost m8 ? u think the flat screen worth it ? i actually got a dell 19" monitor which i like for games etc.

Thanks for all the advice peeps

New PC it is - I'll have to wait a month and then I'll buy it - by then I'll be living in the Channel Islands so no VAT hence better gear (not that I want to gloat obviously)

Until then my CS activities will be on hold but look out when I return B)
