Once again I have succumbed to this killer http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/mad.gif

Quite a happy system until I tried to change the termination on an external device...

Then bsod advising me that I was unable to load the OS http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/mad.gif

Anyone else? Any ideas?

Apparently nothing on Technet/Knowledgebase/Usergrps etc that is any help http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif but lots of poor saps that have suffered...

This'll be my 3rd install... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/mad.gif

+ download of all them other files etc...

I presume you've changed the termination back to its original settings and it's still a problem?

Termination of external devices is a nightmare. There's active and passive terminators, some devices have them built in and others don't, you need termination when you have internal and external devices, but not when you have only external (or is it the other way round?) http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

Sorry - did that http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

Termination was OK & the only reason to change things was to get my Nikon Coolscan working - but all termination was OK.

Was it the old Boot Device Not Available message Puff?

ChrisB.

Kick it?

Other than that, can't help much http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

Puff,

Have tried removing everything on the SCSI chain and just trying it with the HD hooked up?

Puff The Magic Wagon! 21 September 2001 04:12 PM

Error is...

"Windows 2000 Stop C0000218 Registry File Error

The system cannot load the hive file systemroot\system2/config\software or its xxx or alternative is corrupt or missing or read only"

I had added a SCSI Dat to the external chain & terminated it. Other external device was the CoolScan which was seen. Went to reboot & hey presto http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

Chris

Previous incarnation had same problem & I tried that then http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

ChrisB 21 September 2001 06:07 PM

Have you tried using the Last Known Good Config?

Chris.

Puff The Magic Wagon! 21 September 2001 06:11 PM

Yup & same error http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

ChrisB 21 September 2001 06:20 PM

Safe mode...

Puff The Magic Wagon! 21 September 2001 06:35 PM

I can't get it to boot at all http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif Tried all options under F8.

Haven't tried an ERD (haven't got one for this machine :rolleyes http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif would one from a W2K Server work? (as a concept to try)

If I could get even a command prompt I could get some files off before wipeout...

Previously tried booting via CD in order to access files but no joy. It's almost like the HDD has been wiped of its ID thingy (forgot what its called but like partition info but not)

Hmm, not looking good Mr Wagon. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

A couple of suggestions if you want to get files off. First is to slave the HD off a working machine and copy the files that way.

Other means of getting into the HD without needing another PC:
