I promised to come back here when the job was done.
itīs a MY01 bought Oct 2002 with 7800 miles on it. Engine was always noisy. Knocking from cold. Silent when warm. Dealer said piston slap, live with it. I said corrrect it if getting worse. It did. Dealer called the importer who said change the cambelt tensioner. This has now been done but it is still knocking. I put my head under the bonnet to listen (I have 10 years of experience from motorsports so I know when a sound is not a sound but a noise). The noise is not coming from the front of the engine but from down there in the middle. I can only say PISTON SLAP. What do you think?

Is dan4 here? I remember you experienced slap with your MY01. How did it work out?

P.S. next week a guy from the importer will listen to my engine.

Iīll be back here.

Pete Croney suggested trying this to diagnose piston slap.

Start the car and then one at a time unplug an injector lead. Plug each back in before moving onto the next cylinder.

Piston slap normally affects cyl 4. If the knocking goes away with the injector unplugged, then that's the cylinder with a problem. Cylinder 4 is the one nearest the passenger seat (RHD car). If the noise goes with cyl 4 unplugged, my money is on piston slap.
Maybe it's worth a try.

Thanks Ozzy.

How does the injector leads look and where are they placed?

Can I have someones thoughts about what will happen with pistonslap say in 3 years time and like 30k M more. Will it always be the same or will it get worse? I did a search and I canīt imagine the car on the soundtrack sounding like this from new?
Someone on here also mentioned cylinder ovality as a result!!

Has anyone had their WRX MY01-02 diagnosed with pistonslap?

dan4 where are you?

HELP ME PLEASE!!

Am I really the only guy in the world with this problem?

Please help me out guys or I will drive the car into a wall.

Greetings m8,

You'll find the injectors are located under the inlet manifold on a small rail. If you want I'll try and get a few pic's for you.

Hopefully these will help you.

Many thanks for all the help so far guys. But I really need more info bout this.

What will piston slap lead to eventually. Say 3 years and 30.000 more miles? after 100.000 miles?

Has any MY01-02 been diagnosed with piston slap?

The tensioner in my car has been replaced to the new one. IMO this means my car has the slap. Itīs surely not the clutch and the noise comes from the middle of the engine, not the front or underneath or from the wheelarches.

Claus

Read the SIDC FAQ section. This does indicate the realms of piston slap but on later classic models. Worth reading it just to see if it sheds any more light on it.

Thanks caz1562

But I have already been there. I also done lots of searches here.

Piston slap MY01-02 anyone? If they donīt suffer from this, then what is my engine is trying to tell me? because it certainly is talking.

Claus
