we got and havent regretted - buying Fuji 602. £502 vat free at Dixons in heathrow.... plus they have a return it if you dont like it within 90 days policy which is free when bought at an airport. Theres a dixons in most uk airports now...

Be prepared to spend an extra 200+£ on accersories though! - 160£ 1gb microdirve, 40£ 8x 2000ma batterys & charger, £25 soft case, £15 lowe pro carry case, £30 mains power cable......

Well I keep looking and am tempted by the Fuji 602, and would be interested in other peoples opinions, it is nearly in your price bracket.

I have an existing digital camera, and am looking for a new one. The current one is a Fuji camera and although it is good, its 3 or 4 years old now and my dislikes are the time taken to process a shot, which means a wait beofre being able to take a second shot, and the ability of the flash which is awful!

I've got a canon S40 (now superceded by the S45) I think it's a cracking camera. You will get a lot of opinions on this, but I am happy with the quality of mine.

Open the link below to see a few photographs I took with my 5 mega pixel Olympus C5050 digital camera. Its slightly more than your origional budget but I think its a superb camera. I had the 4 mega pixel Olympus C4000Z before I bought this and was more than happy with it also. The C5050 has just a few more SLR type features which if your only going to use the camera as a 'point and shoot' camera, your not really going to use.

You could buy the C4000Z and have money left over to buy yourself a bigger storage media card. The C5050 although being dearer comes with a battery charger included which trust me is a must for any digital camera owner, along with an extra set of battery's.

I also went for the Canon S40. There wasn't a better compact digital camera.

I have had a Fuji S602 for a month now and love it. This is my 3rd Fuji and can highly recomend them.
Some pics taken with the S602 are HERE and HERE. Keep in mind these are bloody fast cars going past so not all are in focus, I'm still learning the art of panning.

If you want one then go to amazon.co.uk HERE. £529 is the cehapest I have found it. I printed that out and went to Jessops for a price match. So you get the best of both worlds, internet price with a high street back up.

just for the record.... if you do go Fuji.... hope you never have to send it back for repair.

Their tech support is........ well, almost non-existant!

They've had mine for 2 months! Every week, I phone and get the reply "it will be with you early next week"

Never again for me, no matter how good they might be.

I'd agree with the Fuji customer service comment as I work in the channel and there repair service is bad as is Nikons.

That said Fuji do make excellent cameras and even the cheap ones seem to produce cracking pictures.

I've just bought a Canon Powershot G3 (mainly coz i use a D60 and the batteries/cards are the same) - the G3 is awesome, i paid £550 online. Image qulaity is superb, every feature/control imaginable and as compact as is reasonable.

Depends what you want it for. If its just for the internet and posting pictures anything above a 2 mega pixel will be suffice. In fact i think that even if your for getting your pic's printed out like you do with your convential camera thats enough so you dont need to spend the kind of money your taking about.

A good qulaity print is usually about 300dpi - so 2million pixels is only going to give you a 4.5x3 inch print or thereabouts. As you say, fine for web posting, but i'd look at 4million as a minimum for photo qulaity prints at 6x4 or bigger.

I wanted to do my own printing as I was sick of the developers producing poor quality prints so I bought a budget setup, Kodak 6x zoom 2MP camera (£149)and a cheap Epson 830 photo printer (£86) and the prints (4x6) are loads clearer than I used to get. The best thing is being able do delete the crap shots so you don't waste paper/ink, click on this link to see a full size pic I took at Boxhill last week.

For compact, Canon have launched the Ixus 400, which would get my vote - see dpreview.com. I've got a fuji 6900z and bought an Ixus V3 for my wife. The ixus 3 is fantastic, and so small that it'll go anywhere.

Have you seen the D60 replacement announcement? Again, DPreview has a preview of it...

I got the Fuji before, pretty much the same thing, and it takes good shots but as others here have mentioned, it takes ages to store pics. My Dad's SLR digi Canon (it did cost a few grand though) makes it look like a weed in storage terms and in picture quality.

If you intend to go out and about and shoot off stacks of pics, eg at an air show, think about an extra battery, the Fuji one will run out half way through! I am pleased with it though BTW!

This seems like an exceptionally good price, still £399 on the High Street.
The only drawback with this deal is the new docking station isn't included as it was designed for the UK market and the cameras come from France.

Minolta DiMage7 - fantastic camera.

Have a search on www.jessops.co.uk and look for a condition 1 used one. Most stores do mail order.

I went to Jessop's yesterday to look for a digital camera. In the end it was between the Canon Powershot S50 and the Minolta F300. Both are 5 mega pixels, but a little more than £400 - my uncle is bringing me one over from Malaysia, so I'll probably pay about £400

The Canon had a few more 'advanced features' but the Minolta was a little smaller and more compact. I'm probably going to get the Canon as the SD card that comes with the Minolta won't work with the Archos Multimedia Jukebox....
