Looking to head down to Wales for the weekend in 2 weeks.
Having only recently moved to Birmingham and never having been to Wales would be grateful for some tips on where to stay. Would'nt be very keen on a long drive. Thanks in advance. |
Where abouts in wales are you going?
What do you want to do? How much do you want to spend? At the top end the St Davids hotel in the bay in Cardiff and the Celtic Manor just outside Newport are both good hotels if a little pricey. |
If you say where abouts you are going I might be able to help.
However have a look at the welsh tourist board site http://www.tourism.wales.gov.uk |
Clewyd Gate in North wales isn't bad, I have stayed there a few times with work. Its near LLandrynog,
|
I have stayed in a few recently in the Swansea Cardfiff Area.
Cardiff. St Davids has to be the best hotel I have ever been to. Swansea Ramada usual chain stuff wouldnt lke to stay long. Holiday Inn usual chain stuff some grotty rooms. Marriott Pretty Good. Morgans Very nice although cheap rooms are usually gone. Patricks (Mumbles) not a hotel but a lovely place to stay with top food. |
St Davids in Cardiff is wonderful. One of Rocco Forte's new "luxury" hotels. The Lowry Hotel in MAnchester is part of the chain - v v cool.
Mossman :) |
Nant Ddu Lodge on the A470 up to Brecon

Has had royalty staying there as well as Noel Coward Et al. Got married there 2 years ago fantastic setting and stunning views i think they do special weekend deals. service from the staff was second to none http://www.s-h-systems.co.uk/hotels/portmeir.html Big plus is the superb drive from Bala to porthmadog at the most 2 hours from Birmingham [Edited by mattstant - 2/28/2003 4:07:33 PM] |

On a serious note if you go round Bala, watch out for the POLICE they target non welsh cars, and are very hot on speeding !!!!
If you really like the coast line you can not beat Pembrokeshire, bit more than a couple of ours, 2-3 hrs. Their is a welsh website promoting pembrokeshire, i'm sure you'll find it on a serach engine somehwere ! Hope that helps. I can recomene a very good Hotel in Wolfs Castle, about 10mins from St.Davids. Wolfscastle Country Hotel, very resonable and in the Welsh Rarebits Good food guide, all nice hotels and restaurants in wales in it. http://www.rarebits.co.uk/ http://www.wolfscastle.com Tis my Uncles Hotel !! So i know its good !!! [Edited by JimmyRB5PRO - 2/28/2003 3:59:08 PM] |
Jimmy in the 20 odd years i have been driving backwards and forwards to wales i dont think i have once seen a police car between Bala and Portmadoc
|
Youre must be joking , i have two friends who has boats in portmadog and their must be about four of us who have been caught speeding ! They are always in bala town when u turn right and go up the hill, round teh lake at the top and in the layby half way down the long straight on the top !
You must be very lucky then ! Cheers |
i have seen them in Bala it's self and i was with someone who got caught just on the outskirts of the town in a very sneaky spot just before a 30 sign.
What sort of boats are they i sail a wanderer dinghy out of Borth y gest when i can |
Hotels in Wales, what will they think of next !

Just come back from a few days blatting the P1 round mid Wales and didn't see a police car once:) I would recommend mid Wales as its no distance at all from Brum.
Take the A458 out of Brum, past Shrewsbury and over the Cambrian Mountains to the coast - this road has to be driven to be believed:D! If u want a hotel on route try the one at Lake Vyrnwy - not cheap but the view across the lake is spectacular:D Enjoy! |
