I was coming down a dual carriageway and a police car was sitting on the grass hump of a roundabout. I couldn't see a person in the vehicle but I didn't really get a very good look. I had been overtaking someone in the fast lane so I was doing about 65mph (70mph on the speedo) in a 50mph zone.

Is this a common place for the police to catch people?

If I have been zapped, how lightly are they to 'do me' and what can I expect?

Sorry if this is another boring thread, but I'm obviously a bit apprehensive!

Wuss.

You will know either way within two weeks. They have to send you a notice of intended prosecution within forteen days of the offence. The Police have a duty to remain safe when ever they carry out road speed checks, and in the manner you describe this does not sound the case. It is common practice for them to hide behind the passenger door so you may not have seen them.
Sweat it out and make sure if the NIP does arrive later than 14 days you contest it.

Doesnt it depend on the equipment they are using to measure the speed, If it is a radar dont they have to show you the spped measurement. Only units that have video / printers can they prosecute you by post without stopping you near the scene.

could be wrong about this.

I think that if the vehicle was a marked policecar rather than a van, you will be OK. A unit with cameras does not have to notify you at the time, however I believe a police officer with a laser gun, has to show you the reading.

There is the possibilty that the car was supporting some other police operation. Or even speed trapping from a helicopter. Mind you I don't know how this works, as I can't imagaine they land the helicopter everytime they see someone speeding to show them the reading!

They will probably cut your wedding tackle off, fine you a years wages and force you to drive a Ford for the rest of your life....:D

The very few times I've seen a marked police car with camera equipment, they weren't pulling people over ... if someone was obviously going quick they would give a little flash of the blues ... seemed like they were testing equipment.

Hopefully you'll be OK, you weren't at mad speeds. Good luck.

Thanks for all of the feedback!

I'm going to wait and see what happens, but at the moment I am feeling a little more positive about the situation!
