and fitted the RLD under the bonnet? If so where did you fit it and did it work ok?

thanks

superdon 26 February 2003 07:31 PM

i'd be interested to hear this too.

MJW 26 February 2003 08:05 PM

I've just had mine hardwired in today. The RLD won't fit behind the grille so I've had it put just at the side of the no. plate :

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.napalm/wrx-rld.jpg

It seems a lot more stable now ie. less false radar alerts. I think if the RLD is too near the GPS antenna it causes some interference.

According to the instruction manual the RLD unit is waterproof though I don't think I'll be attacking it directly with the Karcher just yet (even tho' the car's filthy :D ).

Stu_WRX 26 February 2003 08:16 PM

looks a nice job that. Where did you get the cable into the cabin??

MJW 26 February 2003 08:24 PM

Got all 3 cables (power, GPS & RLD) coming out at the passenger side of the centre console and an on/off switch at the right hand side of the steering wheel - I'll take some pics when in the daylight - the light in my garage is f00ked !

dba 26 February 2003 08:42 PM

so that unit could get stones hitting it then? It just doesn't feel that sturdy to me tbh.

Also, are you getting lots of false alarms from traffic lights? do they use x band,is that why?

MJW 26 February 2003 08:57 PM

Most of the false alarms I was getting were K-band alerts. I think stuff like automatic doors, traffic lights etc. were causing them in addition to the GPS antenna.

Wherever you mount the RLD (if not in the cabin) it will be subject to some hammer, but it has to be able to see the road ahead so I guess it's a chance that must be taken. Either that or I could blag some powder coated ali mesh from work and stick it over the lower dam I suppose.

dba 26 February 2003 09:03 PM

doh! yep,the false alarms i was getting were k band, hence why the unit said "K-band" on it!

also, the instructions say you should put the antenae on the back window if the fron window has a heat thing in it,well so has the back,or are they referring to different types of heated screens? I have my aerial at the back because its neater and it was easy to tuck it under the trim.

good idea the ali-mesh thing, all you need is a big stone and its nacked,

TurboKitty 26 February 2003 09:06 PM

How did you run the cable from the parcel shelf to the unit itself, out of interest?

dba 27 February 2003 10:01 AM

thanks for the photo, but theres no way i can get mine at the front.I have a plastic mesh, which is handy, but i can't be arsed taking the bumper off and for the life of me i can't find anywhere to get the cable through the dash. Its just to cramped from the top.

dba 27 February 2003 02:10 PM

The thing also seems to be a lhd model, with the wires coming out of the wrong sides,i.e power should be on the left, with rld and antannae on the right

thats my biggest gripe tbh, plus the power chord would be better if it wasn't curly, imo, minor gripes i suppose

Stu_WRX 27 February 2003 04:52 PM

I totally agree with you on the cable entries, I have mine in the same place at the moment.

Nice touch with the alert!! :D Handy for those who've not seen one before.

Stu..

TurboKitty 27 February 2003 04:55 PM

dba, any chance of you answering my question, please?

Neanderthal 27 February 2003 06:50 PM

MJW, did you hard wire it in yourself or did you get a company to do it?
Mine should be arriving tomorrow and I'm dreading all of those wires :o

dba 27 February 2003 07:07 PM

Turbo kitty.

in my car,its easy to peel pack the rubber trim around the cieling and tuck in the aerial cable.I took it to the parcel shelf and put the aerial at the top, with loose cable sitting on the shelf itslef, because i have a hatch. It doesn't look untidy because i have used a little clip thing to tidy it up.

The rld in the midle of the screen was just as easy,as there is also a rubber strip at the bottom of the screen and the cable tucked into that.

MJW 27 February 2003 07:23 PM

I got an auto sparky to wire mine in - if you'd seen the state of the speaker cables in my living room you'd see why !

Anyway, here's the RLD again since the last pic was a bit unclear :

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.napalm/snooper4.jpg

and a close up ...

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.napalm/snooper5.jpg

This is the best spot for the GPS antenna (I have a wagon so parcel shelf is a no-no) :

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.napalm/snooper3.jpg

The GPS wire is hidden in the a-pillar trim and dashboard.

The next pic shows the wires coming out of the centre console, and finally a good use for the OE stereo ;) though I can put it down by the ashtray if need be - I haven't decided on a final home for the display unit yet ...

Neanderthal 27 February 2003 07:28 PM

Cheers MJ :)

How much did the Sparky charge you? I'm about as good with wiring as you rate yourself ;)

dba 27 February 2003 07:49 PM

yep, looks good MJ,the wires aren't as obvious, and its less likely to get nicked down there as well.

where do you live and can you give me the number for the sparky chap if you are in the south east

dba 27 February 2003 07:50 PM

lol,West Yorks is where i use to live,no good down here. Will have to go to the yellow pages. Can you say how much you paid mate,to give me an idea? cheers

MJW 27 February 2003 08:23 PM

Well the job took about 3 hours, and I reckon I got off lightly at a cost of £60. But then again the auto sparky who did it is one of my tenants, I'll knock it off his rent :)

dba 28 February 2003 12:48 PM

reet,i may be being very stupid, which is likely, but the aerial has a flat side which i automatically used for the velcro and stuck it onto the rear screen.

but thats the back isn't it? effectivley pointing into the car?

I have turned it over,so the side with GPS on it now sticks to the glass.

I now get 5 sats within mins, instead of 15/30 mins.Could be a coincidence, because it may not be cold starting any more, but decided to post anyway, even at risk of ridicule.

MJW 28 February 2003 07:15 PM

I had the same problem at first, as the GPS antenna was stuck just above the rearview mirror. When I put it on the dash as in the pic the reception seemed a lot better, so I guess its supposed to be positioned with the flat side down.

Neanderthal 02 March 2003 02:18 PM

Fitted mine on Saturday. I have now put the GPS antenna on the parcel shelf and run the cable as best I can hiden from view to the control unit on the front windscreen.
Very impressed so far although unless I get it hard wired into the car I'm going to have to learn to live with all the wires :(

One thing I hadn't thought of though is removing the unit when parked up. The power and RLD unit unlpug from the control panel easy enough but the antenna cable seems far too delicate to do this on a regular basis?

superdon 02 March 2003 02:21 PM

so you'd recommend it then? i still havent took the pluge yet :)

Neanderthal 02 March 2003 02:26 PM

Yep :D

I think I um'ed and ah'ed for about a month before I finally thought "sod it" and brought one. I have to say that I believe the Road Angel would look a lot neater than the Snooper but I can't say anything wrong with the Snoopers performance. Living in Northampton I'm spoilt for choice as to what speed camera's to test it on and it's not missed one yet :D

dba 02 March 2003 02:27 PM

yep,but i can't compare it to anything, but it works well. With Automute,Smartmute and Logic mode 2 it basically screens most traffic lights out,and even then with automute you only get a low volume alert. With Gatsos its perfect, but ive yet to test it with laser, which i suppose,is the real acid test. Will it pick a laser up soon enough? dunno yet

superdon 02 March 2003 02:53 PM

i think i will go for it next week. when i have the new car delievered i am going to get doc clifford to install a tracker and he said they can install the snooper properley at the same time.

is the bracket any good for the display? will it go in a MY03 ok?

Neanderthal 02 March 2003 03:01 PM

In the manual they say they have custom brackets for all makes of car. I'm going to phone them next week to see how much one is. The screen's a lot smaller than I expected although you can easily see the warnings, but reading the speed and compass are a little hard from where I've mounted it (middle of the screen).

Don, I got mine for £375, I can give you the contact details of the company (credit card facilites). I'd not hesitate to recommend them!

Matt

superdon 02 March 2003 03:04 PM

email me the details, although I have seen the offer of one for 370 all in that I may go for.

dba 02 March 2003 04:30 PM

make sure the price you are paying includes the rld
