Hi everybody!

I know some of you live near Bracknell and are also IT types, so I was hoping you could offer some advice.

I want broadband but:

There is no cable in my street.
I failed the ADSL line test even though I am less than one mile from the town centre.
Tele2 could not install wireless DSL because there is a tree in the way.

I dont want ISDN because its too slow and expensive for the speed.

I want it mainly for games so I need a good ping.

My modem used to be OK just about but since I replaced the motherboard with one that does not have an ISA slot I had to replace the modem. I have tried several so called "hardware" PCI modems and they are all S***e! So much for progress!!!

Your advice would be appreciated.

I know a couple of people who have been using tele2 in Wokingham and are really pleased with it. I am not sure if it covers bracknell though.

Dr Nick,

There's actually a meet in Bracknell tonight if you are interested http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif as you might be able to ask some of the people there.

Excellent

I should be able to make it about 8 ish

When did you have your ADSL line test done? RADSL has been released recently, which should be more forgiving of lower quality lines.

Gary.

And how do I go about getting a test for that??? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Not sure, check with your ISP. I think all new ADSL installations are RADSL, but am not sure.

Gary.

The "R" stands for Rate-adaptive, which means that the exact bandwidth you'll get will be dependent upon the quality of the line. From what I've read in the past, I think you are correct in your thoughts about satellite links.

A friend of mine who had problems with massive packet loss on his ADSL installation (when BT came around to check it, they said the line was too poor quality and it should never have been installed), hasn't been moaning since it was switched to RADSL when it was released back in June.

Cheers,

Gary.

What does the "R" stand for.

Interestingly, I have just got some blurb through the door this morning about broadband by satelite. I expect this will be no good for games because of the distance up to the satelite and back resulting in bad pings. Comments anyone?

You got it yet?

Satellite broadband is VERY expensive.

Can't understand why wireless is no good. I have two floors, a TV, video, sat, dvd player, a desk, some carpet and some plasteboard(you get the picture) between my pc and my wireless router.

I know a tree is thick but it aint that wide, you'd think you'd pick up the signal around it.

Cut the tree down !!!
