We have an intermittant problem with our 2000 advanced web servers, running IIS5

Html pages work fine all the time, however asp connections to an oracle database sometimes don't work with no response given after a timeout.
The servers are running network load balancing, if a connection is made to the other server asp connects fine, but this has to be done direct to its IP address, not the cluster address as that still wont connect to the asp page.
Tried an oracle connection from the problem server and it works fine, also tried stoppping and restarting IIS. The only way to restore the asp link working is to reboot the server.

Anyone got any clues where the problem might be?

Sorry if it sounds a complete jumble of words there!

Cheers

Yep - I had almost exactly the same thing (with MS SQL rather than oracle).

The problem relates to MDAC, version 2.6 in particular. MDAC doesn't support ip addresses properly (doesn't matter if you are using web ado or odbc connection strings).

What you need to do is to put entries into the hosts file on your webserver so you can access the server by name. (I can't remember whether it was hosts or lmhosts... I ended up putting entries in both)

Cheers for the info..

I've checked the MDAC, we have v2.5 installed, so maybe time to upgrade to v2.6 as technet states that could cause asp to hang accessing the oracle db.
