Help...

I want to buy a 17" monitor and I don't know which one to buy? If it helps, I'm running a Voodoo 3dfx card. I have seen quite a few on Dabs for about £150 but which one do I buy?

Sorry for posting a "you don't want do to it like that....do it like this.." post but I have to be honest and say that a PC's usability/enjoyment is all to do with the monitor.

Its your eyes, invest in the best you can - put it this way, how long will a monitor last you ? And at least you can take it between PC's. I invested a lot of dough in a 22in iiyama pro model, possibly overkill for some, but I spend about 10 hours a day on a PC. However I can say its an eye-relaxing time.

I go with Iiyama too - quality.

Definitely go for a 19" opposed to a 17"

I've never used an Iiyama monitor that I didn't like. They are great monitors.

Personally can only just fit a 17" on the desk at home. Definately no way I could get something bigger than 20" in the study i.e. v samll bedroom http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif )

I have an NEC Multisync FE700+ which I'm very happy with. It doesn't do 1280x1024 very well at all - it has go inter-laced but I knew I wouldn't want to run it at that. at 1024x768 Its just fine for my needs at Home.

Definitely go for a quality brand as you'll be using it a fair bit I dare say. I'd strongly sugest Mitsubishi, Iiyama or ViewSonic. Definitely avoid Formac. DiamondTron/ Trinitron monitors tend to be more expensive but last longer and can give a better picture quality. If it was me I'd go the Mitsubishi route every time although I have a ViewSonic 17" that I'm pretty happy with.

Check out the PC magazine web site. They have 17 and 19 inch monitors lab tested. They are normally pretty much spot on.

Cheers for the help guys. I am now trying to make my mind up but I think I will go with a iiyama 17". I only use it in the evenings for surfing and stuff so I can't justify a 19" or 21" http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif

I can also vouch for Iiyama, I've got a 17" that I paid about 300 quid for 3 years ago and its still superb. Bit gutted on what I paid for it when I look now but better picture than mine at work(Nokia) and way better than my brother's noname one. 3 year warranty too !!

PC Pro highly rate the new Samsung 700IFT monitor. It's not cheap for a 17" screen (~£220 + VAT) but was the winner in their recent lab tests.

I've had a 17" Samsung at home for 3 or 4 years. I paid over £300 for it back then but it will still do 1280 x 1024 superbly. We use Samsungs at work as well.

Well, I've just ordered a Iiyama 1402 17" for £151 from Action.com. 16" viewable display, 3 year on-site warranty and quite adequate for my needs. Thanks again for the advice.

Now do you want the good news or the bad news:

Good - I arrive home to find my monitor has been delivered already (just over 24hrs) when I said 2-3 days delivery.

Bad - The screen picture is awful. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/mad.gif It looks like it has shadows and is not and I quote "Crisp, Clear display..." I went to the Iiyama web site and downloaded the driver it recommends and I can't get that to work either!!!

Any Idea's apart from sending it back or testing the "on-site" warranty.
