druddle 01 August 2001 12:53 AM

also this - a speccy emulator

DazV 01 August 2001 12:30 PM

Man, I *LOVED* Gunship.

Did you ever get Gunship 2000 ? Let you fly several types of copters the further you progressed. Magic!

BrownDot 01 August 2001 01:06 PM

Yeah, I have a Speccy emulator. Amazing how the memories flood back when you see a one of your favourite speccy games.

For me, it was one of the first games I bought for my spectrum shortly after the machine was first advertised (small b&w ad in the back of the sunday express for a Spec48k, £149.95)

The game was 4D TimeGate by Quicksilva - once I played that as a kid there was no gonig back, and I'm still hooked on stuff today.

(Sigh) Seeing my first glimpse of a new unheard of game called 'Elite' on my BBC'B.

Getting the lads round for a joystick bashing session on Summer Games with my Commodore64.

Ah, memories - I did a conversion of Atari SuperSprint on my Amiga A1000, in pure assembler, back in days of yore. None of this C++ crap and days of fiddling just to get your compiler setup for DirectX. Just me, copper, agnus and denise, and of course the "Hardware reference manual"

Those were the days....

InvisibleMan 01 August 2001 01:29 PM

Elite is the Elite!!

It was so cool as it went on & on, mission after mission.

Thargoids were pants! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

BrownDot 01 August 2001 01:34 PM

Yeah, but did ya have the elusive BBC'B Disc Version, that added extra mission stuff to the tape version ?

All this fancy pants shaded polygons are taking away from the monochrome beauty of the original!

chiark 01 August 2001 01:45 PM

Daley Thompson's Decathalon was what killed my joystick http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif - though summer games on the C64 was cool, as it managed to almost get graphics in the overscan area...

Amiga? *sigh* I still have my 3000 and 4000... Those were indeed the days. You could guarantee what graphics sets people were using and just hit the metal directly with no qualms whatsoever.

fast bloke 01 August 2001 02:01 PM

Did anyone ever finish Manic Miner. As I remember it took 20 mins to load from the tape drive. When you lost your three lives you had to start from scratch. Imagine playing GT3 without a memory card

BrownDot 01 August 2001 02:07 PM

fast bloke,

Can't remember having to re-load Manic Miner ? You sure ? Classic game.

Sometimes I wish the 3D accelerator card hadn't been invented, so that developers could just focus on the game, and not the 3D.

OOh, I can feel a

andys 01 August 2001 02:21 PM

For all you Elite fans take a look at

BrownDot 01 August 2001 02:26 PM

andys,

YeaH!

InvisibleMan 01 August 2001 02:40 PM

Fast Bloke, I got to the end but couldnt finish it, think there was a bug in the speccy version, Same with Atic Atac & come to think of it, the Hobbit. I think i must of had some *cough* corrupt originals http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

InvisibleMan 01 August 2001 02:47 PM

i've got a whole set of the speccies.

ZX80,ZX81+16K rampack!! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif with standard blutak attachment! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif
ZX48 & ZX128

Thats why i've so much patience, 20+mins for a game to load & just....as it gets it crashes.

BrownDot 01 August 2001 02:55 PM

I finished 'The Hobbit' - got a free book with it too. Melbourne House - still in business today.

Way of the Exploding Fist - now there was a game!

BrownDot 01 August 2001 03:25 PM

Check it out...

Markus 01 August 2001 04:02 PM

ahhh, them's were the days!

had a speccy 48k then got the oh so powerfully 128k, oooh! very cool.

Then went onto amiga, cos I got addicted to Falcon! very cool!

Think that Exile was one of the best games I played on the amiga, my mate had the original acorn version and had completed it the bast!

As for Elite, oh yes!!! Never really got into Frontier, but seeing as it's a shareware download, I might grab a copy.

DavidRB 01 August 2001 04:02 PM

BrownDot 01 August 2001 04:23 PM

ooh! Falcon - now there's a good game. I had the stingy 512k A1000 Amiga, which didn't show the bullet holes on the cockpit canopy like my friends 1MB Amiga500 did!

Best game on my Amiga ? Hmmm...

Test Drive & Test Drive II ?
FA/18 Interceptor ?
Great Giana Sisters ?
Turrican ?
Defender of the Crown ?

JoeyDeacon 01 August 2001 04:38 PM

FA/18 Interceptor was my favourate game on the Amiga. I loved the bit where two planes had been stolen and you had to "convince" them to bring them back. Shooting them down had the desired effect!

Shooting down the cruise missile was bloody annoying as it was difficult to even get close enough to it.

Most annoying bit of the game was trying to drop the rescue pacj for the downed pilot. How many hours did I spend trying to do that!

Markus 01 August 2001 04:39 PM

FA/18!!!!! Now that was a seriously cool game.

Turrican was tops, actually completed it as well!

Man, I miss my amiga, I had a 2mb upgrade and a second floppy drive, ahh, bliss!

BrownDot 01 August 2001 04:48 PM

Or trying to rescue the President's Passenger AirLiner - when you got up close to it, it was really big! When you'd been used to flight sims like Sinclair Research Flight Simulator on the Speccy or Fighter Pilot on the Speccy this seemed like totally new terrotory!

Steve Perriam 01 August 2001 06:37 PM

now them days were the days of real games. still remember the day i got bought a commodore 64 with tape drive !! disc unit came along a year or so later and wow, a whole 170k formatted on it http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

none of this 500mb, trillions of ram and graphics cards running faster that a jet plane just to run a game !!

i still remember 4 player games of MULE, 2 player battles at Archon or Way of the Exploding Joystick, oh i mean Fist http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

another classic was DropZone and anything by Jeff Minter. Ballblazer was a gr8 2 player contest as well.

i think the worst game i ever had for loading via tape was 30 mins for The Pyramid which used to crash right at the end regularly !

how sad am i http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif
