What are the options/costs when it comes to alloy refurbishment? How much does it generally cost to refurb an alloy? How much for a set of 4? Can deep kerbs and scratches be repaired? What is the process for refurbing an alloy, how is the work done? How much is it to get alloys refurbed in another colour such as anthracite…or dare I say it gold

All general and specific info appreciated, as it’s a topic I have little/no knowledge of.

you could take a look at www.wicked-wheels.co.uk
I havent had mine done yet (got a 2 inch scrape on one rim) but they said the price would be £50 + VAT + paint per wheel. I know my local Subaru dealer uses these guys (make up your own mind whether that is a good recommendation or not!)

Have a mate who does this for a living (as well as selling tyres).
He charges £50 approx per wheel - depends on the damage. ie time for labour.
Most are sand/bead blasted back to the bare alloy then the damaged areas are filled and sanded down.
Whell is then resprayed in your choice of colour then sprayed with lacquer.
Looks brutal but the finished product is excellent.

I've looked at refurbing alloys before (on an MR2 but the process/costs would be the same) ... was quoted IIRC about 50 quid+VAT a wheel.

I got a set of MY01 alloys for my MY00 scoob for about 280 which is around 70 quid a wheel all in.

To be honest if it is going to cost you 50+VAT per wheel I'd keep looking at the For Sale section and pick up some MY01/02/03 wheels that some flash owner has changed before they have even had a chance to be kerbed ;)

There are always some muppets (read I am jealous) who seem to be able to give money away (changing STi7's to 8's .. spending 10K on mods then selling when finished) .. bound to be someone giving away some nice alloys soon :D .. may be cheaper than a refurb?

Doofus.

I just got 4 alloys stripped down and painted black for £30 per wheel.

That included taking the tyres off, blasting the wheels, rubbing down etc, painting, refitting tyres and balancing. They did a fantastic job too :D Wheels look like new.

£120 cash for all four wheels :)

Darn! It just that I saw a nice set of ST2's in gold but I HATE gold! I was thinking of buying them and getting them refurbed in anthracite but by the time I buy them, refurb them and rubber them I'd have been cheaper buying new anthracite rims with a rubber deal

POC: where did ya go for that great deal?

ozzy 19 February 2003 12:41 PM

Kenny,

A friend of a friend has a refurb place in Glenrothes. I'll try and dig out the email from him detailing what exactly gets done.

If I wasn't so far away, I'd get mine done their myself as he's a top bloke and would look after your wheels.

Stefan

ozzy 19 February 2003 12:42 PM

oh, forgot to say but he reckoned about £35 per wheel. I've spoken to a place in Airdrie and they said the same. I wouldn't pay £50 a wheel personally.

Chrome, was a local company to me in Hemel Hempstead, BJV Engineering - 07938 023 236, old boy with his own business.

Took them a week, but normal turnaround is a few days.

Cheers

ive just bought these fellas from a mate, and this is probably the best wheel of the lot, there chipped kerbed and going yellow, the oz racing text is gone from 2 of them as sum harsh cleaning stuff has been used on them
http://www2novaload.net/files/micky/rally1.jpg
ive refurbed 2 of them now
rabbued down, take all harsh edges from the outside and fill any chips/scratches with fibreglass/filler, prime and spray, they have been done in vaxhall glacier white, a local graphics place has one of the wheels so they can match the oz racing text up for me (£32 for a set of 4) the original oz text is painted on the rim itself, will do sum pics when all 4 are finnished (havent even picked me scooby up yet lol, will probs be 2morow :) )

I did mine myself for about £30 (silver paint, lacquer and wet/dry sand paper) prior to selling the car to the dealer. The end result was not perfect but the dealer couldn't tell when I said that I had had the wheels renovated (didn't say I'd done it). Only problem is each wheel took about 2-3 hrs hard graft with power sanders, then hand sanding and then spraying several coats of silver and lacquer - oh and its easy to make it look sh**e.
