I'm going to upgrade 3 NT4.0 servers to Win2K and would like to take images of the partitions on each server and then copy those image files away somewhere else whilst I do the upgrades. In essence, I'm making a safety net in case something doesn't go quite right during the upgrades.

Problem is that Ghost (2002, 7.0 and 7.5) doesn't appear to like to take an image from one NTFS partition and dump it onto another one on the same machine. Is there any way around it using these versions of Ghost or do I need to upgrade to a later version? All seems a bit more complicated than need be by the looks of the Symantec site.

Tried Drive Image 2002 but it doesn't like servers :( - any recommendations for PowerQuest's Deploy Centre before I put down the cash?

Any other solutions?

create a fat32 partition on the same machine and store them there?

You still need to write them to a fat partition.
It also doesn't work if you have a raid 5 setup, it just sees the whole array and not partitions inside it.
Run windisk, you might have a spare partition e.g. a recovery partition you can zap to get a gig or so back for a FAT drive.

workshy, are you saying you can't take a binary image of a server if it's in a RAID5 configuration? Never tried it but planned on doing so.

I've successfully taken images using Powerquest ServerImage with RAID1 mirroring.

Thanks folks. Some of the answers point to the problem I think. I've got RAID5 set up on all three servers. I've cleared a lot of data off one of the servers so might be able to reformat that as FAT32 and then image the other partitions to it.

Jods - I couldn't get it to work with Ghost - couldn't see any partitions, just the whole 160Gb array, so there was nowhere to write the image to.
Mate here at work is saying he managed it with driveimage, but had to modify some .sys file - I'll get more info if you need it.

Just found this - it "might" work according to Symantec but you're on your own.

Purchase Ghost Corporate edition

Thanks Workshy, I'll take a look.

Big Bank has just bought a corp licence for Ghost Enterprise so will be using it extensively in Q2.
