Oops...got flashed on the A3 heading into London on Sunday by one of the camera's around the kingston / tolworth area doing 65/70 in a 50 limit.

Does anybody know if these are dummies, loaded with film at all?

Cheers
Rich

If it flashed twice it has film in it. If once you may be OK. Its a bit of a cheeky location but its a well know camera as lots get caught by it.

Richardw 11 February 2003 12:26 PM

I wasnt sure if it was twice...i'll hazard a guess and say yes. B&*%dy stupid really as i know where they are..must have had a rush of blood to the head!

Mice_Elf 11 February 2003 12:31 PM

Not necessarily.... The dummy cameras that flashed only once became marked by road users, so now even dummy ones can flash once, twice or thrice.

Best thing to do is now play the waiting game and see if you get a NIP within 14 days (ish).

storm555 11 February 2003 12:31 PM

Good luck as taht kind of speed may mean court apperance, what do you drive?

Chelspeed 11 February 2003 12:31 PM

No thats wrong. In Glos for every 6 cameras there are two that flash but only one has a camera, the other one has a much cheaper radar unit and flash but no camera, it just flashes to worry you. Works doesn't it? I'm sure all other counties are the same.

Is this the camera about 100m into the 50 limit while you're still out in the country on a dual carriageway? I got flashed by that a year or so ago. I saw it in the distance stood on the brakes, slowed down to a steady 69.9mph and still got flashed as the b*sta*rds had slipped in a 50mph limit despite it being good wide dual carriageway and no houses for miles.

I think they have set this camera to 50.1mph and use it to ensure people stick to the 50mph limit but have no film in it because it would run out in an hour or so. There was one on Avon Bridge by Bristol that was the same, the first camera in the road works always flashed but no-one ever got a letter. The rest of the cameras alternated between working and not over the life of the roadworks but the first one stayed live for the duration and ensured people really did slow down before the roadworks.

Depends, sit tight and see what arrives through the post, think they send something within a set number of weeks.

Be careful also in Fulham, they have cameras on Fulham Palace Road.

Andy Tang 11 February 2003 12:45 PM

I have it on quite good authority that the cameras from Tolworth up to Wandsworth are *ALL* live!

Obviously it depends whether there is film in the camera.

Several friends and colleagues have been 'done' by various cameras up and down that stretch!

Give it 15 working days for peace of mind! :)

Good luck!

storm555 11 February 2003 12:46 PM

I go to our regional office in Fleet most Monday mornings via A3 and the cameras along there are busily flashing away to themsleves.

Richardw 11 February 2003 12:50 PM

Cheers for the input folks. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Jodster 11 February 2003 01:50 PM

How many shots can the film take in the Gatsos?

I know the camera you mean, hidden behind a sign just after Esher turn-off. Sods. I've seen that camera, and the one on the other side of the carriageway before the bridge, go off for no reason so I'm not so sure they're active. Of course I never risk it.

I hope you get away with it.

Richardw 07 March 2003 03:13 PM

:D seem to have got away with this one - 3 weeks now so they cant prosecute me ( according to the the drivers survival handbook )

Jodster 07 March 2003 04:41 PM

Glad to hear it.

Question: do mobile camera vans have to be marked with "police" or "safety cameras" or "scientific support" ????

There was a van parked in a lay-by near Milton Keynes yesterday which was white and had blacked out rear windows. Just wondering if I will get nicked for doing 78MPH in a 70 zone......

Richardw 10 March 2003 08:16 AM

Clarebabes,

I'll have a look in the manual for you to see if says anything about these....most of the book is dedicated to speed cameras so there must be some info and possible advice.

Rich
