A debate that cropped up at work yesterday, a lot of 'hot hatches' post manufacturer 0-62 times of around the 6.5-7.5 seconds mark. 2 sych examples, mine and a colleague's:
V6 4Motion Golf 7.1s MG ZR160 7.4s However, both cars fail to hit 60 in 2nd gear, I think mine does about 55-58 before rev limiter. So, what would you reckon on 0- end of revs in 2nd ? or at least how different from the 0-62 time ? Sorry ... it's sunday - Jon |
That was the reason why the Saxo VTS could get to 60 so quickly. Citroen lengthen 2rd gear so it could do 60, thus saving a gear change, and about a second.
Cheating buggers ! :D ;) |
reckon I could do the same in my 'Dub ? ;)
- Jon |
My S3 takes about 6.4 seconds to 60mph and that will only reach 58mph in second other wise it would be 5.8-5.9 seconds.
0-100mph is more important that 0-60 to me. |
Funny this should crop up, did some 0-60 runs with an AP-22 today, I think having 60 inside 2nd gear is a help, tho power was tailing off. Never tried changing up to third as figured I'd lose more than I gained.
6.41secs tho, not bad for an Octavia estate. Ian. |
nisr i think you need a new stop watch it seams to be running slow.
i prefer 80 - 110 ;-) |
LOL:] I worry about my gearbox!!!
|
<takes hook> ;)
Whilst its true the VTS reached 60mph in 2nd gear it didn't run out of puff there, but would still pull well in 3rd and reasonable so in 4th. My VTS was one of the X/Y reg runs that was romoured to have nearer 130bhp. Whilst I didn't have the means to properly test the 0-60mph I strongly believe it could be done in about 7.2 seconds. Given that my first ever 1/4 mile day produced a 15.3 @ 88mph it seems plausable that the first 60mph of that was achieved in nearer 7s than 8 :D The CTR is a deceptive car as it defo needs 3 changes to hit 60 and yet still produces a useful time. Scooby 0-60 is wholly dependant on brutality :D |
Mt brothers Tuscan does 85mph in 2nd gear...hence 0-100 times of 9 sec's!
I do agree that 0-100 are the times to look at, my RA is meant to do 0-60 in 4.5 sec's with 2 gear changes!!! Dom. |
Golf V6 4Motion 0-100 18.2 sec according to Autocar, according to:

My 2.8 capri does 80 mph in second  and that is not even redlining it  god knows what it would do if I revved it to 6,500 rpm  but it would probably run out of fuel first :D;)

I think the in-gear times are more relevant for todays cars.
It should be noted that most manufacturers quoted performance times are not achieved under road conditions (i.e. all the relevant seats, trim, fuel load, etc etc) |
ok, agree totally .. so here's a question, how would you define the 'quickest' car on the road, and what would you be measuring ?
so for example, "it's the Caterham Blackbird, because it will do 20-120 through the gears in 9.7 secs" ... Jon |
But 0-100 is irrelevant because you can't do 100 on UK roads :( read all figures 0-60, 30-70 & 50-70 and make your own mind up.
Paul |
I did say 20-120 ... but that was the point, opinions are ok, but there's surely a way to mangle all the figures and have a 'performance factor' purely for 'how quick' but useful all the same.
Anyway ... this has gotten more off track the original conversation at work that started me off on this in the first place :D - Jon |
Sorry what are we talking about :D;)
<goes back to work> |
My definition of the fastest car is the one that gets you past an articulated lorry on a twisty A-road in the shortest possible time ... which I guess is the 30-70 time thru the gears.
But in-gear grunt is important too, especially from about 40mph in 4th (for A roads) and 60 mph in 5th (for motorways) because you don't always get the opportunity to drop a cog. |
My favourite was the old Performance Car (and occasionally used by Evo) figure for Time Exposed to Danger (TED).
This was a measure of how long it took (in seconds) to overtake, using all the performance available, an articulated lorry travelling at 45 mph. |
i agree with 0-100 times being the best measure....
I can't hit 0-60 in less than 5 secs.....but hit 100 in 9 secs, rwd and no grip ;) bout 18 secs to 160 too ;) |
2.8i capri. nice motors ( well kinda - nice engine and box, lets ignore the handling :) ).
never tried for 80 in second but mine it would certainly do 40 in 1st!!! |
dingy - wtf car have you got

MK 2 escort.
;) |
how much do you want for it?
:) |
totoally agree on the 0-100 thing, it was a discussion based solely around
"I wonder if my car will actually do 60 in 2nd, and if not how this affects my 0-60, and hence how quick will it reach 58 or whatever .." in addition to this, I know my old (H plate) Vauxhall Astra 1.4LS (no fuel injected, twin choke as standard ) would do 70+ in 2nd ... the absence of a rev limiter, and the need to have the car in one piece meant I never dared go past 70, but it certainly felt like it would! This left the car feeling pretty nippy to 60, though that was back in the days of promotion fromy my mum's 1.1efi Fiesta http://www2.mornington.org.uk/pics/c...stra_front.jpg (said motor) - Jon [Edited by scoob_dood - 2/9/2003 5:31:00 PM] |

I'd be interested to see what my lardy V6 makes! but spot on, the Octavia is a cool Q-Car, especially in estate form :D - Jon [Edited by scoob_dood - 2/9/2003 6:47:37 PM] |
IMO, the 0-60 is becoming more of a pointless figure these days. Yes its a benchmark, and back in the 60's it showed up slow cars, but its not a true indication of cars peformance anymore.
Most cars lose half a second if they have to change into 3rd before reaching 60. Most 4wd drive cars gain about half a second on the 0-60 (1/4 mile) due to their brutal launch technique. In other works a 4wd car can be hitting 60 over a second quicker than another car, but once moving (ie off a roundabout) there's nothing in it, it could even be slower. A lot of people say the 30-70 in geartimes are a better indication, but even then you can still get caught in the wrong gear, off boost, etc depending on the car. I've also noticed that the 30-70 times are more or less the same as the 0-60 time anyway. 1/4 mile and 0-100 times are better if your into traffic grandprixs, but in the real world the best figure, which is available if you work it out, is the "through 60-100" time, in other words 0-100 minus 0-60. Then wheelspin, wrong gearing, turbo lag etc take a back step, and its just shear grunt. Still nice to boast 0-60 times if you do have a quick car (i.e my Pulsar does 4.4) if somesome thinks its the final word! [Edited by nisr227 - 2/9/2003 7:38:43 PM] |
well from VW (DE) I see :
Beschleunigung, von 0-80 / 0-100 km/h Gang-Schaltgetriebe 4,7 / 7,1 So 0-80 kmh in 4.7s so 0-50mph in 4.7s seems ok for my Golf. - Jon [Edited by scoob_dood - 2/10/2003 10:43:42 AM] |
Agree that 0-60 isn't really relevant on real roads -- it's too brutal on the car, all that sidestepping the clutch and powershifting. But that's why the old AM Vantage was always reckoned to be the fastest-accelerating car of its day, even though the 0-60 time was the same as the old 911 turbo etc -- it needed a 1st-2nd change at 56mph which "Car" mag reckoned added over half a second to its 0-60 time.
30-70 through the gears is a good measure, and I like a car that's quick 50-70 in 4th, as it's a good way of seeing how quick the car is for those marginal overtaking opportunities ;) [Edited by brickboy - 2/10/2003 11:21:38 AM] |
