Looking at getting a impreza turbo 96-99 i do almost all motorway miles if driven sensibly what mpg would i get approx?? Also ive heard the service intervals are 15k is this right? + What are the engines like on the scooby are they quite hardy i.e. i havent seen many with over a 100K. Any help greatly appreciated. service intervals - every 7.5k. 25mpg on a motorway run is realistic....

Gav - sensible motorway miles out of ours (UK MY98) gets us between 23 - 27 mpg....although I did get 28mpg once, but this was on a 60mile cross country blast! :confused::D

As for the bad news - on the classic shapes you're looking at 7,500 mile service intervals or 6months. They alternate with one little one which will cost you about £100 (oil change etc.) and one big one which is anything from £300 - 500. There are some excellent specialists around though which will bring the costs down (and IMHO the quality up!:)) from the dealers :)

My MY00 Turbo can achieve mid to high 20s mpg on a long cruise. A lot less if I am stop starting and being a little heavy with my right foot.

Service intervals are every 7500 miles :eek:.

I will leave the answer to the longevity question to someone else with more experience.

...also, as long as the engines are well treated etc. Warmed up and warmed down, I've heard they're pretty good and know of a couple myself over 100k :)

if you are talking about a UK turbo then I guess mpg driven sensibly on motorways would be mid 20's, maybe a little more.

as for service intervals, its every 6 months or 7500 miles. one is small service (approx £120) one is biggy (approx £500), assuming servicing by main dealer.

engines seem to be pretty reliable, if standard. Best go for 99 if you can as it has a bit more welly and various other slight changes over previous models. also 98 models seem to suffer from piston slap (whatever that is!)

I have a MY96 UK Turbo, which does an 80 mile round journey every other working day. This is almost pure 70 MPH carriage way and no matter how I drive the car I always seem to average 27MPG.
One thing I will say is I don’t enjoy the car using it for this journey.
I find it difficult to drive as I'm up and down the gearbox when the rev's drop below 3K it makes it difficult when the motorway slows down to 60 and bunches up.
If I used the car on weekends and/or did the occasional track day then maybe I'd really appreciate what the car has to offer.
I believe the newer models like the MY99 has a smaller turbo, so its easier to drive in slow traffic and the pick up response its better below 3K, not sure though.

MY97 gained the smaller turbo & few interior improvements but there is still no real torque low down the rev range so u just got change down earlier ;)
From wot i've herd 6 figured milage no trouble if sensible mods have been used although needless 2 say there's no guarantees init. Hoping biggest service will only be £500 as i have 90k un in a few months which is as big as they get :eek:
The summary is sure as sh!t aint cheap 2 run but the smiles per mile is absolutley worth it :D & the owners r trully the most friendly & helpful i can think of ;)

If you can stretch to it the Bugeye 01/02 cars are apparantly better for motorways and sevicing is every 12k or 12 months I think.

Lets face it though, scoobs were not made for motorway munching, you'll need to find some country lanes every day :D then find a good Osteopath to fix your back after all those miles ;)

I use mine on the motorway alot and it is about 25 mpg at cough 90 cruising.

Since I had the prodrive performance pack put on I have managed the same and sometimes better as the car drives a lot smoother.

Can't bothered working it out but a full tank costs me about £40 and I get on average 320 miles. Mainly motorway miles @ 80mph.
Run an STi3 totally standard with SUL.

320 miles form £40 :eek: thats about 100 miles more than i get per tank full :(
Less preasure with the right foot needed i think
