Hi, does anyone know what kind of signal the telephone mute expects. I was think of rigging up a switch to mute the head unit and I don't want to fit a hands free kit.

Is it a 12v signal or ground, and is it a pulse or permanent signal.

thanks
Mike

Normally, simply connect to ground to mute. Check your manual for the unit tho, but I can't imagine it'll be any different. I did this in an old car, and actually mounted a foot switch on the clutch foot rest :)

The manual just says 'to hands free kit'.

Did you use a push to make switch or a latched switch.

thanks

Needs to be latched. It only shuts up when it's grounded.

I saw a device advertised on the web that picks up the gsm signal when the phone is in use and can mute the stereo.

dont know if it works it was about £15

This is a little more simple. Most aftermarket head units have a "mute in" connector for the output of a hands-free kit.

Ground that wire, and the radio will mute. Mine shows "Tel Mute" on the display when it's grounded too. Disconnect from ground and it'll come back to normal.

Ain't technology brilliant? :D

Thanks again.

Just a thought about that gizmo, if it's anything like those things that flash when you phone rings, it would mute the radio every time the phone polled.
