A Friend has a problem, the car keeps cutting out when cold , until warm , when it's fine. The car is a 1998 1.6 Petrol Pug 206.

Anyone any ideas, ??

if you r talking about fish's car u need to use a time machine and go back a few years before he started driving it like he does maybe that will help!
if not after all that abuse driving it like it was some type of F1 car and racing everything and thinking u need to use the hand brake for every turn just replace everything.
i will never forget our faces fish's driving five people and a red golf going backwards up the east lanc's after leaving the roundabout with fish at the wheel. :-)

sorry but all guesswork based on my old golf (but seeing as you asked in drivetrain ;)).... Does it have a lumpy idle too?

1)if you have a standard airbox there may be a small pipe that connects to the outside. Check this is still connected and clear.

If you have an aftermarket air filter that disconects this it can cause problems..

2) Problems at temperatures that go away tend to imply a thermostat failing as the Engine compensates for cold starts.. IIRC it runs it rich to start with. So it may not be doing this

3) The Thermostat that allows the water to pump round the engine is kicking in too soon and cooling the engine before it is "warmed up" so it may start run for a little while then die. This is a REAL pain to get too and requires coolant to be drained for it to be replaced... May be able to check using a voltmeter :)

Bare in mind I know NOTHING about this car :) and all advise is based on my limited automotive knowlage :) bottom line ask someone who knows about these engines but a free ttt for you :)

The Car is bog standard, and has not been modified in any way :)

Avi - this was a known and common problem on 205 and some 206s. The 205 1.6 GTi was a nightmare for this.

Phone any Peugeot garage and speak to a tech. Should be able to help quickly.

But it sounds like cold start enrichment - possibly a module or sensor fault.
