A new feature has been added to DeltaDash. This allows on road dyno testing of 99MY onwards Subarus. Anyone who already has the product can download this update for free from the downloads section ecutek web site:

http://www.ecutek.com/downloads/DeltaDashBeta.zip

Others can also download this new version for free to view dyno runs from other people's cars.

The tests are impressively accurate. I had my car tested on the rollers last week. It achieved 227 wheel horse power. On the road, DeltaDash calculated wheel figures of 222 & 233 BHP for 2nd & 3rd gear respectively.

This version is a Beta, so please post any comments that you have.

Is tha sample log supposed to be a .ddf format? DeltaDash only knows about .csv's :)

You open the sample log from the 'Road Dyno' window.
Click the 'Open Data File...' button in the lower left corner of the 'Data Analysis' tab.

I'm going to try this tonight, to se if my car delivers as much power as Subaru promises :)

With a little work you can extend DD to measure transmission losses too, you would need to log a coast-down run in the same gear.

Yes, it is a very simple calculation.
I've considered this, but have decided not to implement the feature. All calculations are done on RPM values of the engine, which are very accurate. Once you disengage the gearbox, RPM no longer corresponds to vehicle speed. Standard vehicle speed diagnostic data is very slow to update and pretty inaccurate, so I don't want to use that. I prefer that people can compare the figures that the software produces with confidence that they are very close to the truth. Plus, real world, useable power is wheel power, so we'll stick with that for the timebeing.

btw, it would be useful if people could post the weights of their cars. This is required for accurate power calcs.

My 99MY UK Turbo with a full tank of fuel weighs 1300kg. So that's 1370kg with a driver.

A 2002 WRX weighs around 150kg more, so that'd be around 1520kg, though it would be nice if someone has had theirs weighed.

Is the setup for the JDM STi-7 the same ? Do I select UK STI-7 pr STI-7 from the drop down menu ?

What is the weight without passenger for a JDM STi-7 ?

Road Dyno is great. Got 290 bhp and 280 lbft before third gear let go. Was hoping for 300 at the wheels too since 4th gear runs an extra 1 PSI at peak power :D

For weight, you'll have to weigh it, or get someone else to weigh theirs of similar spec. Once you guys have some weights, I'll add them to the software for ease of use.
Drag & frontal area for 2002 will be roughly the same as for the 99MY. If you know more exact data, please let me know, and again, I'll add it to the software. If you power test in 3rd gear, the drag power loss is pretty low. If you have these figures wrong by 10%, then you are only going to be out by a couple of BHP. The car mass is the important one.

JB means at the wheels. This is evidently the power at which the teeth fall out of your gearbox !

By the way, a little tip: If you want to work out approximate shift points from a number of dyno runs, e.g. 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear runs, just plot them all and select the axes as Vehicle Acc'n vs Vehicle Speed. Where the lines cross is approximately where you should change gear. From the picture below, you can see I should change from 2nd to 3rd gear at just over 60mph.

I had the same problem when I used Excel to calculate the power from a DD run, but then I guess you know that. I never took it any further, but it needed a run with the RPM logged alone to get a nice high aquisition rate. I also don't know the steps on the RPM, 50rpm I guess?

Very useful piece of kit.

Steven, while on Demo mode, when i try to plug in any number for tire profile & tire width the cursor returns with a value of "100".
Any suggestions ?

Hi Guys,

From hunting around the web I think the JDM STi-7 weighs 1,430 KG without driver and the UK STi-7 weighs 1,470 KG without driver.

The standard wheels are 225 45 17


Can anyone confirm the above ?

Also, when plugging in the data I add my body weight to the car weight correct ?

I am sorry I have not had time to play with it too much, but when I get everything setup and I am driving how do I do the test. Do I just go to the start test screen and then floor it anywhere in 3rd gear ? from standing start ? etc etc ?

Thanks for getting the vehicle mass data.

Yes, you add your weight and anything else in the car such as the dog (pressed against the rear window during test) and wife (shouting at you to slow down). And don't be flattering with her weight either because the heavier you count her, the more power your car is calculated as producing. Could be classed as one of life's great dilemmas !

You need to select the gear you are performing the test in - 'test gear'. You then need to click on start test - it will tell you what to do. You basically have to drop below 1250 RPM and accelerate until you reach the speed limit of the private road you are on. The test will complete as soon as you lift off.

You can later reload the file and edit any parameters such as 'test gear' or 'vehicle mass' later on if you get updated data on the car for example.

You can smooth it further by selecting 'Very Heavy' smoothing as opposed to 'Heavy'. It will be interesting to see whether those slight peaks and troughs are really in the power curve, or whether they are just inaccuracies in measured RPM by the ECU. I may need to smooth even more if they are.

I use 1 RPM steps, though the newer ECUs will report 0.25 RPM increments.

Only thing I would add is the rolling radius is going to vary from the free radius of the tyre, and they can grow with speed. Only really an issue if you want to get absolute figures, when really the comparisons will be accurate.

I saw the smoothing options after I posted on johns screen shot!

I would like to see (in the future)a user defined export of DD values into labjack memory space so as to trigger various events (alarms) when certain thresholds are reached(temps,rpm,boost, etc).

With tyre wear & pressure there are so many variables. In the end I think it's better being simple, since like you say, it's a comparative tool to use before and after making mods.

So you'd like to operate the labjack relays based on thresholds for diagnostic parameters, yes ? Sounds like a good idea. You could use it to trigger nitrous, water spray & water injection. Could be a while coming though - I've got my hands full right now. Same goes for the dash display, though it is on the cards.
