When trying to capture DV film I've ruun into the 4GB limit in Win98 with FAT32. I've read on the MS website that NTFS is a better File System. But can you convert FAT32 to NTFS? I don't think you can as I can not find it on the MS site...

Windows 98 does not support NTFS :(
Its was designed for NT4.0, W2K and Windows XP only. Why do you want NTFS anyway if you don't mind me asking? Darren |
Doh! Second double post in 2 days :(

I believe NTFS has better support for large files. Sounds like an upgrade to Win2000 is required!

Well, since you asked twice ;)
FAT32 only allows a mximum file size of 4GB. When I'm capturing DV files from my camcorder this equates to about 15 mins. So I have to limit the capture to this and create separate files. I believe NTFS does not have this low limit. My other option is to join them back together after converting to MPEG2, which are smaller file sizes. Thanks anyway :) |
I've been doing something similar recently (DV camcorder ->firewire -> PC), have 5.7GB capture lying round on a fortunately large NTFS partition. So yes it works, at least from Windows Movie Maker (blech) and Vegas Video (Sonic Foundry) I tried, I believe the programs have to support it though.
D'uh, should mention, done on XP Pro, miraculously just plugged it in and worked straight away. [Edited by Andrewza - 1/27/2003 2:02:18 PM] |
Dealing with 4Gb files on a Win98 platform must be a nightmare. The file handling of FAT32 is way below that used by W2K/XP. Best go for an upgrade soon!
