I'm an avid Vx user and I've been on the lookout for a decent add-on for ages now. There's some stuff at

Puff The Magic Wagon! 20 April 2001 11:15 AM

Anyone got a UK source for these things? Or know what is available or potentially available?

We're starting to see the rollout of services by the main mobile telcos, so wanting to get a solution for a project I have in mind.

Looking (in particular) for Palm based or CE based PDA type devices - Palm for preference.

Any help/knowledge appreciated.

Puff

If you got a Geodesy you can use it to link into your palm PDA and provide SATNAV as well as blackspot protection

If you're going to be buying PDAs - be aware that there is a big price war loomig so this will mean cheaper PDAs all round.

Puff,

i hear that GPRS isn't providing anywhere near the "theoretical" bandwidth in real-world situations - might be best to wait until 3G!

Orange do HSCSD, which gives 28K *now*!

Needing to get small amounts of data to/from couriers. SMS is probably too expensive. BT/Cellnet are offering 1mb @ £7.99 month & I can keep well within that. At least £30 equivalent in SMS (before line rental http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/rolleyes.gif )

The problem is finding GPRS PDAs - the rest is already sorted http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

We have Motorola GPRS phones on the Cellnet service that is to be launched later in the year (May I think). I can't sell you one as we're a software house, but I can tell you what it's like.

I've heard Trium will be doing a GPRS PDA, check

gregh 23 April 2001 11:57 AM

Puff,

You want a Compaq iPAQ pocketPC. Then today you can get a PCMCIA jacket for it and a Nokia Datacard, then over Orange using HSCSD you can get over 22k data connections.

Then we have announced a GPRS jacket for the iPAQ

polarbearit 24 April 2001 11:37 PM

Have seen the Truim Mondo, unit, looks the business. Motorola are launching a GPRS palm OS handheld which is smaller and less feature packed, but should be sensibly priced and available very soon. Mail me if you want more info...

Should just note GPRS WILL be capped at 28k and the speed may drop depandant on the number of users in the cell. Motorola will be the 1st phones available with GPRS because they are the only company with large enough numbers to launch.
