Hi all,

quick question for anyone in the know - do the chains need checking or replacing on these engines to prevent expensive damage, or are they assumed to be good for the life of the car?

I've heard about guides and tensioners being replaced as a preventative measure - is this part of the service schedule? Any ideas on cost? Would really appreciate some views from owners/people in the know.

Off hand (as im not an expert on vw's) i would say 60k miles (which seems about average on most cars) or 5-6 years whichever is first.

i was going to recently purchase a golf vr6 and the chap selling it said that the chain snapped on it when it had 135k so he had to put a new lump in it...:( pricey.....YES!!!!! it was a 96N reg.

Personally i think you ought to get it checked out every so often just to make sure it is all running ok...

Check the chain when it's serviced. They should last the life of the car but it's always worth checking. May need adjustment.
