Hope it aint in a scoob.... The thing would fall apart.

6K in a car............ get real

You have a 6K system and your asking about alternator upgrades????? Not those market stall "Boss 190485763498765 watts per channel jobs for 99£

Having fun.... what the hell is your system\??

6KW @12V = 500A!

or ~417A @14.4V.

That's asuming 100% efficiency in the electrics.

John.

gullys01 24 January 2003 02:06 PM

no! just the 2 15" audiobahn atw woofers run 6K i'v also got
a set of 6 avi mid ranges 2 sets of power aquistic tweeters for sound
i'v got one audiobahn screen with ps2 and tv tuner ,.
with a pioneer head unit with 6 disk changer.

oh yeh AND a 5K zapco amp and equalizers with one 4 channal 600w audiobahn amp.
also runing 2 caps for power storage but only lasts a bout 5 mins if fully charged

pls guys someone must know how to get this system runing right.

my mates got the same sort of system in a golf but hes runing a 120AMP ALTERNATOR.

im having problems finding an alternator..

chiark 24 January 2003 05:54 PM

Gully, good luck on this, to be honest I think you'll need a vehicle electics specialist though, as you'll be drawing a hell of a lot of current with that Zapco amp.

There's a place on the Stanningley Bypass that specialises in alternators, particularly re-winds. I'll do a bit more digging and see if there's any chance that they might know how to do it.

Have you got aircon? I wonder if you could actually run two alternators. I really don't know if that's technically possible, but that might be the way to go: couple of batteries for the system running off their own alternator...

I'll let you know if I find anything out, and keep us updated.

Nick
PS - good luck stopping the rattles :D

David_Wallis 24 January 2003 06:34 PM

Your going to need at least 2 Batterys in parallel..

Would recommend Optima Yellow Top

1 Big alternator, custom mounted is the easiest way

or 2 rewound scoob alternators (about 90a std iirc)

Obviously its not continiuous load so you dont have to worry about a 500a alternator but I would aim for 200a - 250a

Also Might be worth using chain drive / toothed belt if your going serious

If you want a big alternator, do a bit of digging and find out what kam jagpal (sp) used on his transit.. (think they were bosch)

Oh and lots of 0 gauge cable..

David

gullys01 24 January 2003 06:56 PM

yes i'v got air con and abs if i put in two alt's it will look like a supercharger as i will have to cut a hole in the bonnet
thats the only place i could put it .

i'v got a yellow top get battery, which has given a little help, but finding a big alternator to fit is a bit of a problem

thanks guys for the help if you can give any more help pls do
my e-mail is gullys01@yahoo.co.uk i'm on scoobynet all the time

Do the math, if your amps really put out 6kW then you're looking at about 1000A current draw. Absolutely no way you can run at that level continuously. What fuse(s) are you running ? That should tell you what your system is really pulling from the charge system. You can run multiple alternators, but that's getting into heavy duty stuff and I doubt you need that.

Steve.

Have you tried Stinger. They do competition alternators. Have a look at: http://www.stingerelectronics.com/sting_products/alternators.asp

They do alternators up to 270A.

rockinRu 25 January 2003 03:06 PM

A Stinger is going to cost him a mint...so is a Prestolite. But the Prestolite will out do the Stinger in every aspect, including size unfortunatly...they're MASSIVE.
Yes,hood modifications will be a must with the newer H4's and these alt's.With the right regulator, you can weld 1/4" plate steel with these alt's.;)

I too make my own brackets for my alternators.Nothin too it...I'm a welder.:)That link didn't seem to work...

I have a 135 amp Leece Neville in my old hatchback...:)

Used to live in Wakefield and yes I do a lot of mileage

Audio images specialise in that sort of gear.. and should be better than some of the Dodgy dealers around leeds!

I went for Genesis stuff.....

Had a look at a nice Soundstream amp the other day, gold plated thing 2,000w rms. Sounded amazing, knocked my pheonix gold to dust. Very silly money though :(
