Hi all. Just put a deposit down on a new RAV4, now have to choose options.

The stereo is a big DIN2 thing, and the screen shows readouts such as temperature, so it's probably not easy to swap it for a new one, though I'd love to (could other normal stereos be wired to show this data?). The optional extra 6-disc changer is another 3-400 euro, which seems really pricey, though installation is included. Should I buy this, or would I get much improvement in sound quality from changing the stacker and the speakers only, and leaving the OE head unit?

The optional reversing aid says it has 2 sensors. Would these be crap for thin objects like signposts, or if I got an aftermarket system with 4 sensors would it be not much better?

Anyone know of a good RAV4 BBS?:)

Brendan - which model is it, and what grade of stereo does it come with?

(Lots of RAV experience)

are they all permanent AWD?

Brendan Hughes 23 January 2003 12:58 PM

Diabolo - model is the brand new one (if they've changed 02-03 don't ask me!), 5 door, loadsa options (we don't get NRG etc here, we get Base, Option Pack 1, and Option Pack 2; I went for top spec). As for "grade of stereo", I can only say that it is the OE Toyota-supplied unit with RDS radio and single CD, rather than the cheaper tape deck. I don't have the catalogue in front of me so I can't give the Toyota part no.:(

Fosters - the cheapest one only has 2wd, the others have 4x4, I assume permanent but could be wrong.

Pleeeease anyone?

1.8 NV base three door is front wheel drive only.

I think the reversing aid has 4 sensors (two rear and two for left/right hand side).

Have these on Mum's 1.8 NV - very very useful for reverse parking!

you can use a sony changer or Dension DMP3 80GB MP3 player with the standard RAV4 head unit yby utilising the connects2 ATYS001 Toyota installation adaptor.

Richard E-B - sounds positive. how does it work with thin objects like signposts?

Lee - many thanks for the link. Will it improve the sound much, or am I trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear by putting it through the OE head unit, even if I uprate the speakers?

12LEE 24 January 2003 04:28 PM

I don't think that the make of changer will affect the SQ in any great way.

Personally (but I'm odd w.r.t. installs!) I'd look to retain the stock HU but still add amps, subs, new speakers, etc.

RESSE 24 January 2003 05:39 PM

Brendan,

Personally I use the sensors for manouvering the car at all times in reverse.

The rear window is quite small and the rear wheel carrier sticks out a few inches more than the back of the car - obvious I know but worth mentioning!

The sensors are superb, a small "ping" sounds when reverse is selected, and the beeps from the sensors get closer together the closer you get to object behind you.

It has picked up a very thin hedge and small road sign pole where I park (using the Rav as my Scoob is in the garage at present having the wheels painted).

You really do not need to look behind you (alomost) when reversing!

PS Practise makes perfect.

Hope this helps, Richard.

Brendan Go here for all of your answers, its an excellent BBS

Thanks guys!

I think I'll add the reversing sensors to the list (well aware that it's got a dodgy rear view!). Not sure about the sound system, may leave for the present, until I have more money. And that's ANOTHER BBS I have to sign up to!;)

:)

Richard, one more question while you're there; do you know if the Toyota-spec long distance lights (spotlights? Translated from my Portuguese price list) are any good?

RESSE 29 January 2003 03:34 PM

Brendan,

Not sure - come to think of it I have not seen a Rav 4s (Phase 2)with spotlights fitted - or any "bull bars".

The base model (NV) does NOT have foglights in the front bumper - indicators only, but the higher specification models have a combined indicator/front fog unit fitted.

Some of the Japanese imported Ravs come to the UK with a chrome bull bar and fog lights with a yellow coloured glass fitted.

Richard

PS the reversing sensors are:
1 on the left hand endge of the rear bumper, 2 underneath the spare wheel on the bumper and 1 on the right hand edge of the rear bumper.

5dr is predominantly front driven, with a viscous coupling to transfer drive to the back when needed.

My wife's old shape one understeered quite a lot round tight bends.
