I have a friend at work who is receiving text messages/calls from someone she doesn't want to.
Can she change her number free ?
Can she block certain numbers from her handset.
Can she ask her provider to block calls from this person (he is doing it from work so it goes through an exchange)

She has one of those Nokia's - cant remamber the model - its tiny !

Any help appreciated.

PS. The calls are coming from abroad if that matters.

I would suggest you/her get onto the phone provider and ask them. I think the answer will be yes to a lot of these questions as they are usually very good about this.

If her current provider is no good then she can always change, the mobile phone market is very competetive and if she doesnt want to buy a new phone there are lots of "sim only" deals for about £35.

You say that "he's calling from work". Does this mean that she knows who it is?

I heard that there were quite a few new laws to prosecute people who harass/stalk others whether in person or by phone. Definitely worth talking to the police.

Right, from what I can gather from the above, She

A) knows the person
B) knows the CLI of the caller/SMS-king.

These could be some of the options she has:

a) call her MSP, ask them to block the number (sometimes possible, but dependant on service provider and on the CLI in question).

b) a number change should be free, certainly Cellnet/Orange/Vodafone do this (unless something has changed).

c) log a call with the police, however due to the foreign aspect, they will probably say change your number.

If her phone is on Vodafone, you may find that the foreign MSP is part owned by VF, so making a complaint to VF may be able to escalated to the foreign MSP too.

Type R - you case is simple, report it to the police, saying that you are getting repeat obscene / nuisense calls, they will give you a crime number and should contact your MSP (Vodafone/Cellnet/etc...). Then your MSP can put a trace on the calls, and will be able, and the police will pay them a visit.. Hope that helps.

Just so happens I've just got some SMS messages today from a number I dont know, they wont answer the phone or say who it is, but seem to know me, the content is more a nuisense than anything else... I will see how it goes, but will do the above if it persists without them identifying themselves.

I am having the same problem too. I don't know the person, and when they ring it comes up "no number".
