OK, after some investigation it would appear I have become victim to a loose pulley on the front end of the crank (thanks for the pointer, Janson1).

Removing the pulley and the engine runs without any of the associated noise mentioned in previous post.

With the pulley off I find the end of the crank has a small hole in it, machined across shaft. The pulley has a slot in it. I assume there should be a peg poking from the hole in the shaft to locate the pulley on? Is this the woodruff key?

Anyone with an engine in bits, or more probably knows from the top of the head, know what it should look like.

Yep, thats the Woodruff key.

I've just had to machine my crank pulley and sprockit to fit my new crank, which oddly enough was 0.4mm larger in diameter than the old one...

Was that on a Subaru crank, or billet ?

The Subaru tolerances are all over the place, even on brand new cranks. Having said that, Farndon are just as bad :rolleyes:

Hello Mark, its Jase, I think you know most of the problems I've had with my crank...

Just for the record its a OEM Ph1 crank (new) and the tolerances were a joke, some under some over, big ends and mains. It makes you think doesn't it?

any one got any suppliers of Billett pulleys ?
