My mate has a 1990 MR-2 Turbo and he reckons its quicker than my 1999 Impreza Turbo. Both cars are standard apart from performance back boxes and dump valves. Should i tell him that he is talking ****e or shud i keep my mouth shut? Also he reckons the turbo in the MR2 is much bigger than the scooby one which is a relatively small unit, is that true?

Your Scoob will be no quicker in real terms.
Someone will be along soon to tell you your Scoob will kill it in the twisties, but it won't, unless the road is wet. As for turbo's, i dunno. Ps - i have a MY99. |
I thought the same thing. Im not saying my scooby will waste the MR2 but i thought the 4wd would give it the edge off the mark. The MR2 does feel fast especially with the roof off! Just a shame you cant keep it on the road when you put your foot down!
|
Subaru's are quick off the mark, fact. But a 2WD car of similair performance and weight will be quicker once moving, when traction is not an issue, after 20-30 mph?
A 240bhp MR2 would be quicker from 30-100 than a 240bhp Subaru (de-cat). An Mr2 is a good comparason as they weight a similair amount, I would think a 220mhp MR2 (early turbo) may be on par with a 240bhp scoob. |
Agree with you guys, once rolling, a 99 Scooby isn't much much quicker than a hard-driven Mondeo, believe me, I know!
However, at the lights, dial-up 4k rpm and let the clutch out as quick as you dare. I guarantee you, your mate won't even be able to spell mr2, he'll be so surprised! Obviously doesn't do your clutch a hell of a lot of good, but it's worth doing at least once! |
MR2 turbos are very quick cars, especially when it's dry.The newer the car the more powerful they are and better the suspension. They pull to around 155-160mph and as the engine is practically over the rear wheels traction isn't as big a problem as you would imagine.

Never quite understand the fear people have of a car oversteering - it can be great fun. |
ok here we go lol
scooby turbo uk 2000 215 bhp 0to60 5.4 secs top speed 144mph mr2 turbo 200bhp 0to60 6.2 secs top speed 145 so from that id tell him its not faster at 0to60 and tell him 1mph aint that much faster at the top end and lets face it i think its all about the 0to60 hope that helps steve |
Its only about 0-60 cos you have probabaly a scoob
0-60 Traffic light GP, or pub talk |
mmmm i dont speed away at trafic lights and ive not just got in from the pub so what your getin at i dont know doctor
the man asked a simple question i gave a simple anser take your head from up your ass |
Surly it also depends you want 2 seats or 5?
Personally id go MR2, my mates just got 2.0 version. We hit 140 in no trouble just down the by-pass and its quite scary how fast it does pull to that. Also RW is brilliant once you get to grips with it. Si |
Have you got the 0-60s the wrong way around? The Toyota would also pull much stronger after 100mph.Later MR2s had more like 240bhp too.
I haven't been to the pub but have a very well stocked fridge;). |
ive got two car mags in front of me with the same stats if i was you keep away from the fridge
|
I try to but it has some strange magnetism(maybe it's the iron in my blood?).I still think this car would surprise a lot of you-one surprised me once and I even had to change down to 4th to keep up:).
|
in all fairnes markus i take on bourd what your saying and agree but when these car v car things come up i just put my head in a couple of car mags and look up the sats and post them but with the mr2 turbos extra power it tends to over steer you into nearby fields lol anyways all the best mate
|
I used to read those stats too but I buy mags like CCC and Jap performance now and they don't have them.So I just go on what I see on the road and track/1/4 miles.
|
scoobs are the best man!
head out of ass - yeah dude, they kick ass! 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile, twisties, top speed, nothing beats a scooby ever, never, aaiigghhtt! Apart from every track day I have ever been to. Bon soir bitch! |
doctor question anser anser came from stats out of a mag not from me from a MAG so if ya dont like the truth i cant help it can i and what track days did you go to cause the uk scalextric championship dont count lol
|
anser anser Keep reading the mags boy! That way you can heave a REAL opinion. |
boy??? id love you to come round my front door and call me that but lets not go down that road yea and i should listen to you as you know more than the pros that write em im sure ....erm no second thoughts ill stick with the pros thank you
|
I've got a MY02 Scooby and an MR2. I wanted to keep them both as they are soooooo much fun to drive.
Once rolling and in the dry the MR2 is a real roundabout hooligan. Rain / snow / sleet and the thing is a rear wheel drive Fiesta. I bought it 13 years ago and never regreted a single second. Carlisle came to a halt today with the ice, Scooby...no problem !! No chance of getting two kids in the MR2 so it has to go (see the for sale section) Midlife.. |
heave a REAL opinion |
not being a hairdreser...not had many dealings with mr2's//// but i wanted an all round performer..so i got a 99 turbo scooby with some ppp stuff...the mr2's ive driven or been in..do feel fast..in real terms they get to 140/50 ..but its the same as most cars..the grunt goes 45/5000 rpm...they will fly about bends..rain and ice..they dont like...not many cars do..difference is this..the mr2 driver may hit 150 and stay with the scooby...but the scooby has the driver and his four mates as well...its like being in a lotus elise or an old 205 gti...always seems faster when the car is small and you low to the ground and having fun...fun = speed..not true..but seems that way to the driver..
|
Where did you get your 0-60 times from StevG? It's 5.2 secs to 60 for the MR2 Turbo and the only 200bhp MR2 was the LHD USA version.
I have a later 241bhp model with the smaller turbo but have had the older CT26 turbo and they are like sh1t off a shovel in the dry. Quicker to three figs than anything I've driven and the 3 uk scoobs 93, 97 and 2002 I've raced (friend's cars) by a fair bit. Absolute sh1te in the wet, but in the dry amazing. My last RR was 221.3bhp @ the wheels which ain't bad for 251bhp @ flywheel. |
the stats ive got up there are from max power feb 2003 edition i know its got some serious rubish cars in there but i like the stats page and the adds in the back lol
|
I had an MR2 Turbo briefly about 7 years ago, quite quick, but they do not handle as well no way, even though, very good handling for a mid engined, rear wheel drive car. According to stats MR2 is 0-60 in 6.2 and UK Impreza Turbo in 5.4. Just find a nice bit of deserted road or go to a track, and show him that you are quicker, coz you are.
|
Ah, Max Power. Nuff said my friend!
When the MR2 1st came out it Japan in '89 it had 220bhp! |
Yours must have been a Rev1 Sparky.
I'm on about the post 93/94 cars that had the suspension uprated and the power upped with less transmission losses. |
fair point father not sure what year these stats are for but looking at the price of fair good and a1 id say its for more recent models
|
They're very cheap now as the insurance is GP20!
You can get a 225bhp rev2 (k) for under £3k now. I've timed mine to 60 at 5.12 secs and 0-100 at 15.29 and mines only got an extra 10bhp from a new zorst. In the dry, of course! Otherwise add 10-20secs onto those times! |
