Better than a P1, better than a 22B, better then a S202....better I say....come on its obvious 2.5 litres...all the complaints about the STI struggling low down will be gone, there will obviously be tons of torque under 4,000 rpms with 300 ft. lbs at 4,000 !!! WOW !! and lets not get started with the DCCD....this thing will not only dominate its class (EVO etc) it will form a whole new class...imho.....I mean come on, we are talking Skyline type performance for a lot less $$$$ .... I am telling you, the best STI ever !!! watch !!!

2.5 litres stock with warranty and 300 bhp and 300 ft lbs obviously on smaller boost than a 2.0 litre could be alot safer as well...probably running on only 13 - 15 psi...car is going to be amazing imho....I am blown away !!!

:D:D too bad I will never own one :D

hahah, I can't wait to lay my eyes on one.

USA finally gets something that doesnt suck.

dan4 07 January 2003 10:27 AM

Will it definitely be a turbo and not just a NA 2.5l car? Anyone know where to read any tech specs on this, or is it just rumour at the moment?

chiark 07 January 2003 10:38 AM

I dunno, especially given the trick front suspension changes of the S202 which eliminates understeer completely. Also no mention of the suretrac diffs in the release. Doesn't mean it doesn't have them, but...

Will the 2.5 block be heavier too, which puts more weight up front?

it'll be very interesting, certainly :D

chiark 07 January 2003 10:39 AM

Dan, see The Official Press Release

dan4 07 January 2003 10:50 AM

Cheers Chiark,

Sounds like a cracker to me!

Adam M 07 January 2003 12:21 PM

nick, 2.5 block is lighter, it has less metal in it!

I wonder if it will be closed or semi closed deck?

STi wanna Subaru 07 January 2003 12:23 PM

semi closed according to the press release

TonyBurns 07 January 2003 12:30 PM

Well seeing will be believing ;) as some of those pics are either from the old STi (as the dash of the new STi looks like it came out of an evo7) or its a mock up.
I also like the part where they are getting the aluminium forged pistons (when the new STi is getting the cast ones which are 110% stronger than the similar ones used in the MY02 STi) and the DCCD control (so they can crash easier ;))
We also have to remember that the STi is a limited produced car, and i would actually say that for the price of putting in a 2.5ltr engine (with developement costs even if using an old engine) would be astranomical and financially unviable unless this engine went into more than just a few thousand STi's for the US market.

So the question is seeing that this 2.5L STI will no doubt appear over here eventually...

Who now wants and MY03 STI when its maybe replaced this time next year?

At least with the STI7 nobody really knew they were about to get shafted!

But when thats released the *new* impreza should be about due so....

A case of damned if the do damned if they don't. Just be interested to see if the MY03 STi sells like the MY02 or will people hold off thinking a 2.5 version will come along for 04? It's got to affect sales somehow.

I'm not due to replace mine for a while yet, so I'll just sit back and watch. ;)

STi wanna Subaru 07 January 2003 01:06 PM

chrisp,

The reason I would give is that then all the 2.0l models become devalued (in terms of image).

The US market is a new one so they can go at it like a fresh piece of paper

Rich B 07 January 2003 01:31 PM

Well I suppose they could add it in at the top of the range for about £30K & 300Bhp+

But then again would anybody then buy the 2L STI At £25K when for an extra £50/month they could have the full blown nutter version?

Either way I think Subaru's gun is well and truly pointing towards their feet.

When is the new model Impreza due? I thought it was 2005?

2002 - STI
2003 - STI + dodgy big lights and red dials but - £2.5K
2004 - STI 2.5 + DCCD
2005 - New alfa style STI

Its like buying bloody computers!

chrisp 01 July 2003 01:02 PM

The only question I have which is niggling me is why only in the US ?

Japan always seemed to look after it own ie all the best cars were JDM cars, they had all of the 22bs (bar about 25), all the stis, more powerful wrxs, big option lists the S20n series car the new spec C, the DCCD, twin scrollers, bascially what I am trying to say is they kept the best for themselves. Seems funny that they arent getting a JDM 2.5 or have I missed something ?

chrisp 01 July 2003 01:20 PM

Surely it doesnt matter when they do it?. They could just add the 2.5 as a flagship model at an extra cost at the top and still have a 2.0 STI option as less cost and also a 2.5 might put out 350bhp in JDM format. Surely it wont devalue current cars as bad as bringing out a new model and knocking 3K of the last of the old ones ?

Okay its a different situation but they did this with the 2.2litrre 22Bs and it didnt devalue the 2.0litres.
